Dialysis Travel

Just curious....do any of you Fodorites have knowledge of someone on dialysis traveling to Europe? If so, can you give any details? I am facing dialysis within the next year and hate to think that I can never travel to Europe again. Thanks.

My brother used the Highgate Unit in London two years ago when honeymooning. They require a lot of paperwork (physician's certification/statement) be submitted well in advance, so the earlier you know the dates, the better. We did everything via phone and fax with no problem. It was expensive (I recall it was 300 pounds) but worth it to see him able to go somewhere on honeymoon.

The website we found information on is Holiday Dialysis International:

www.hditravel.com

We also looked into dialysis cruises. Their website is:
www.dialysis-cruises.com

Good luck to you!

How timely. Just a couple days ago my next door neighbors were talking about dialysis cruises, as he is on dialysis and they have been unable to travel. But she said her travel agent told them there was only one ship and there were only three choices or itinerary in the next year! I'm passing that cruise website on to her!

Try this website:
http://www.dialysisatsea.com/

One of my former clients used to travel with them. They have 8 European cruises this summer, as well as numerous other cruises in the Caribbean, Alaska, Hawaii, etc. They've been around since 1977, and they only deal directly with clients, as they don't pay commission to travel agents. According to their website, each cruise is accompanied by a board elegible/certified nephrologist and one or more dialysis nurses.

They only travel on the newer ships, as the older ones don't have enough wattage to operate the dialysis machines.

Hope this helps.

Not trying to be too obvious, but don't forget to ask your nephrologist about his/her recommendations. They work with dialysis patients for a living, and are certain to be aware of some resources. Have a great trip!
