Rose, I think a day trip would not really be feasible. The train would take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours on way , depending on where you want to go. FOr instance, to St Ives, the train is 6 hours one way.
THe trains going in that direction leave from Paddington train station, so you would take the underground to the Paddington Tube Station and walk over to the train station.
Good luck if you decide to go.
Rose, I did a day and an overnight trip from London to Plymouth to visit a relative two years ago. Arrived late Monday afternoon. Toured with relatives on Tuesday. Took train back to London early Sunday afternoon. It was worth it to see family but not to see scenery. Can't imagine having a pleasant day trip.

Hi

Some years ago, I used to regularly make day trip visits Cornwall for business.
The roads are very busy in summer, so I used to fly with Brymon.
Today there are cheap airlines serving Cornwall, so a day trip may be possible.

I think the route is covered by BA and Ryanair

Peter
http://tlp.netfirms.com

Devon and Cornwall have well deserved reputations as some of the best places in the UK to visit for scenery, coastal walks, beaches and favourable climate. It is however really too far away for a sight-seeing day trip from London to make sense; possibly one reason why so few non-European tourists end up visiting.

Another factor to consider is that the West Country is best seen by car, since the few towns in the area with railway stations are (at least IMO) far from being the most attractive or interesting parts of the region.

Try www.great-western-trains.co.uk for details of trains. They also have overnight sleepers to Plymouth and Penzance. It would be easy to make a day trip from London to Exeter or Plymouth, but you really need a few days to explore the area. The train journeys are worth doing for the scenery - beyond Exeter the line follows the coast then heads inland past lovely countryside. Some of the branch lines are lovely, including those to Looe and St Ives, while from Paignton there are steam trains in summer to the River Dart.
