Segontium Roman Fort isn't a patch on the Roman remains in Sicily but if you are in Caernarfon and have the time it is worth a quick look.

Actually the best of the Roman remains are in South Wales at Caerleon (amphitheatre and barracks) and Caerwent (Roman town and walls), about 60 miles south of Hay on Wye. These would fit in with a day in Chepstow (for the castle) and/or Tintern Abbey.

WOW!! He would love seeing all of that!! Thanks so much, Wasleys!!! I will try to add it to the itinerary. We are trying to decide now if we want 2 nights in Hay (would also visit Tintern and Chepstow from here)and 1 night Abergavenny OR 1 night in Hay and then 2 in Abergavenny. We want to visit Big Pit, which I know is closer to Abergavenny. OR 1 night Hay, 1 night Chepstow, 1 night Abergavenny. Whatever way, from there (Abergavenny) we will head over to Pembroke Coast next. That will still give us 3 nights to move up the west coast until we have to catch the ferry back to Dublin. We aren't fond of 1 night stopovers, but will do if it works out distance wise. Any thoughts?

It is years since I went to the Big Pit - it is a fascinating visit and it is also good to see how bringing tourists in has completely regenerated a run down and depressed area.

Hay on Wye and Abergavenny are only 20-25 miles apart, so I can't see the advantage of separate stops unless there is exciting accommodation or restaurants in both you want to try. Chepstow is about 50 miles from Hay and is going to be 60minutes+ in the car depending on traffic so there may be a case for spending a night there.

Thank you for the advice, Wasleys! I just booked 1 night at Hay and 2 nights in Tintern, at what looks to be a lovely place! We will have a full day there so will be able to visit the Abbey,Chepstow Castle, and hopefully 1 or both of the ruins you mentioned. You helped solve my indecision! And if we don't see it all this trip, we will work it in for next time!!! We will stop at Big Pit (it does sound fascinating and good for the area, as you said!)on our way to Brecon Beacons (just driving through, I think) and points west. We plan for our next night after Tintern to be somewhere in Pembroke Peninsula or around St David's. Any thoughts on that?
