Delta to Paris, Air France to Rome

I am preparing myself or my trip, and am not a happy flyer. Someone was telling me that British Airways give socks, pillows, tootbrush and toothpaste, little hand towels...Does Delta do anything to pamper it's passengers like this?

I think all airlines give you pillows if the flight is overnight. I don't think I've gotten socks from any airline (don't remember about BA, if so, I didn't need them as I wear my own socks). I don't remember the toothbrush, either, except very vaguely -- it's not a fullsize or good one, one can carry your own toothbrush in your carryon, I always do. That's one of the things I'd think you'd have in your carryon as part of the "emergency" things in case baggage gets delayed. I'll admit, I pretty much always carry my toothbrush with me with a small tube of paste.

If that's really an Air France flight, not Delta, they do not give you socks and a toothbrush, but give you earplugs, eyeshade, and I think maybe one of those freshening squares. I don't use them, so don't recall. As I said, any airline I've been on has given pillows.

Put together your own little amenity kits using your favorite items or some treats. Usually you can get small size sample or travel size items from the supermarket or local drugstore. Don't forget to include..

Toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturizer, Wet Ones, a small mouthwash, vials of cologne.perfume, a change of socks.

Don't forget to bring a big bottle of water...

You should have posted this in the Airlines section. You would have received more messages. But here's mine.

I flew to Europe on BA for the past four years and this past summer I flew Delta. Delta gives free headphones (the projected television is in the front of the cabin of their 767 aircraft. I really couldn't see it where I was sitting.) a free pillow and blanket, free dinner and free very small continental breakfast--and that's it. At 2:00 a.m. they woke everyone up to say, "Please check the security of your seatbelt." The fasten seat belt sign stays on most of the flight.

British Airways does give free socks, toothbrush, toothpaste, free drinks (yes alcohol in coach) 18 channels of entertainment on your personal TV screen. The fasten seat belt sign is usually on for only the first 10 and last 10 minutes of the flight.

Bring those $5 bills as Delta charges for beer, wine and all alcohol unless you're in Business Class.

Check the prices. BA is worth a little extra. Trouble is no U.S. airline will accept miles on BA when crossing the Atlantic.

BA also offers a flat bed in business class--I got upgraded for free last year and economy plus which is 38 inches--not 31 inches of leg room. I got upgraded twice on that one, too.

See if you can book your flight on Air France as they are a partner with Delta.

I flew BA in May and they do give passengers those items. with Delta you get the pillow, light blanket, and ear phones for the movies. The BA flight was definitely a cut above Delta--it was the typical 777 but IMO a cleaner aircraft. Due to where I live, however, Delta is usually what I have to fly and where I accumulate most of my FF miles. I remember a United flight as recently as six years ago when small wet terry cloths, warmed and lemon scented, were brought to passengers to wipe hands before dinner and breakfast. Now a foil packet with a wet wipe is what you get.

I take Air France from the States to France and their amenity kit for economy class is as Christina describes. In addition, they give disposable earplugs and some mints. In general, amenity kits in economy class are not the best quality anyway.

Hey meganboston,

We are flying Delta to Paris and then Air France to Milan this Thursday. You should invest in compression travel socks to wear. It keeps the swelling way down and also helps prevent clotting in the legs. Any flight over 2 hrs and I benefit from wearing these socks. As far as the other stuff goes, we've flown BA and Virgin and American and NW to/from England. Virgin is the best with BA next. Unless you are in business or first class, you will be cramped. Bring whatever toiletries and clean clothes you can in your carryon, because freshening up after flying for 7 or 8 hrs goes a long way.

Thank you all for your replies. Sorry for not posting it in the "airline" section. I am new to Fodors.com and wasn't aware it existed. The tips on what to carry with me are very helpful, thank you again!

Don't worry about all that stuff. Bring what you enjoy. The flight to Europe is probably an overnight flight so you will need to have something to freshen up before arrival. I always like to bring a clean shirt to change into in addition to the face washing and tooth brushing. On the return flight it will be daytime so you will need stuff to entertain yourself. Books, magazines, etc.
