To board any international flight, one must have in his possession a passport which includes name and date of birth. This information and the fact that you are carrying your passport will be manually confirmed by an airline agent whether you check in on line or not.
Asking a passenger to confirm the data in advance does nothing other than streamline the airport passenger handling process. Failing to check in on line will neither void your reservation nor invalidate your ticket. Obviously, purchasing airline tickets is not contingent upon your having an internet connection.
However, the TSA has stipulated that an airline must complete check in formalities for international flights no later than 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

For a flight from Detroit to Europe, Delta e-mailed me a request for the security info, then wouldn't accept it, possibly because I do not live in (and am not a citizen of) the United States or the European countries on the itinerary. So why bother? Surely an airline should not encourage a customer to ignore their communications.
Ah, just another reason to lament Northwest being swallowed by the Delta Triangle.

From the Delta web site:
Advisory: TSA's Secure Flight Program
As part of TSA's Secure Flight process, beginning November 1 passengers will be required to provide their full name, gender and date of birth when booking Delta travel. To verify an existing reservation meets these requirements, customers can access their itinerary on delta.com and scroll down to select the "Secure Flight Passenger Data" link on the right side of the page. From there, the required information should be submitted as it appears on the customer's non-expired government-issued photo ID. The name provided does not have to exactly match the name the customer's ticket or SkyMiles account. Visit the TSA website for Secure Flight FAQs and more information.

Air France website is a pain. the worth experience ever. i am a delta sky miles member. each time i have to check in on a flight operated by Air France, it is a waist of time. the online support is low efficiency, don't even try to call...
it has been as is for at least the 24 past months.
