Look, it takes twenty whole minutes to get all the way from one end of London (South Kensington) to the other (Tower Hill).

I've stayed in terrific hotels for cheap down by Waterloo Station, which is four minutes by Tube from Piccadilly Circus.

Before you eliminate an area from consideration, go to thetube.com and use the Journey Planner to determine exactly how long it will take to get from there to your destinations.

Cecilia - thanks for the info.

I tried Googling yesterday before I posted here but had no luck finding the hotel's website, only discount/hotel sites that mentioned the hotel. I prefer to book direct where possible. I will check out ratestogo.
We're like you - we love to walk to see the sights so it wouldn't worry us if it's not as convenient as other places.
Thanks again!
Kay

After checking out the Travel House it seems to be great value. Especially as you can prepare food.I also am not adverse to walking so I would be interested to know walking distances from the Travel House Hotel in Notting Hill to say Westminster Parliament Houses, Buckingham Palace, and say the British Museum.
I was figuring maybe a Thames river cruise to get to the Tower.
If the main sites are too far to walk to from the Travel House what other attractions are close by?

Don't get me wrong - I LOVE to walk in London too. I walk a LOT every day when I'm there. But prefer not to have to walk 2 or 3 miles just to get to sites. Notting Hill is a looong way from most of the sites for walking. I often take 3 - 4 - 5 mile or even longer walks in London but to HAVE to to get to sites really eats into your time.

Notting Hill IS very near Kensington Gardens/Hyde Park. But some other examples -- depending on your route -- Westminster is approx 3.5 miles, B'ham Palace 2.5 miles, the Eye 2.5 miles, British Museum 3.25 miles, Picadilly Circus 2.75 miles.

If you stay there - just plan on using public transport more since walking everywhere really isn't practical.

No hotel is going to be within walking distance to all (or even many) major attractions. Just make sure your hotel is within walking distance of tube station, then order a visitor Underground pass before you leave home so you don't have to mess with individual tickets.

We stayed in hotel just off Oxford Street with good access to Marble Arch station and were very pleased with how easy it was to get around by public transport.

Why would you think I'd be the least bit confused?

Eleanor Clift relates that one of her editors at Newsweek would occasionally return her copy with "SAY BETTER" scrawled on it.
