Ok. I'm down to 4 days in each of Toulouse and Montpellier. That means two day trips from each and leave for the next destination late afternoon of the 4th day.

So we'll spend the first day and most of the last day sightseeing the bases.

It appears the choices from Toulouse are Albi and Carcassonne.

Those from Montpellier are still up in the air.

We do not rent a car, attempt to travel by train but will take a base if necessary and there's a compelling reason for that destination.
