Daytrip to Venice?

Hi, is a daytrip from Florence to Vencie feasbible? We are planning to spend 4 days in Florence and want to go to Siena and San G. as well. Wondering if we should try to fit in a daytrip to Venice as well. Thanks!

If I remember correctly, it's about a 2-3 hr. distance by car, not sure what it is by train. There's lots to see in Venice and half the fun is just getting from the main train station to the Piazza San Marco. After that, you should have lots of time to explore. Expect to get lost in the alleys but that's part of the fun. You'll eventually find your way back. You could definitely do Venice in a day.

Doable but not very feasible...train ride is about 3 hours or so each way so would not give you lots of time in Venice. Overnight will be better.

It's certainly "doable". Question is if it's recommendable!

One may catch the 7:18am IC train (or the 8:42 Eurostar) at Sta. Maria Novella's station in Florence and arrive at 10:20am (11:33am). The trip back may be done on the 7:37pm IC, arriving at 10:45pm. This would add up to about 6 hours travelling for 8 hours sightseeing. Only you to tell if you're willing to pay the price.

Visiting both San G. and Siena out from Florence on a single daytrip is also "doable" by taking an organized tour ... I wouldn't do it, though. I'd choose one (Siena would be it) and visit it on my own, taking the SITA express bus back and forth. A whole day would be called for (departure in the morning and return in the evening). San G. would call for less time, some 6-7 hours total out from Florence (also by SITA bus).

Paulo
DM,

Don't even think about it. Spend your 4 days in Florence. Four days is just right for a good experience and to see most of what you will want to see in Florence.

Roger & Amy

I did it, and it was fun. As previously mentioned, I made my way through the alleys, to Piazza San Marco enjoying the shops lined up by the alley, the masks, bought post cards etc...Then I spent about 2 and half hours at the Piazza, enjoying cappuccino at the Florian, Climbing the tower, taking pictures of the church etc. By evening around 10 pm I left. Most of the shops are open late in venice. But the key thing here is just hope it does not rain, it did on my day trip, just a little bit though. Nonetheless I still enjoyed it. However, mind you a day trip to venice is probably just like an appetizer to a longer stay another time.

Ciao!
Definitely go!!! If you can, stay over night. We just got back from Venice 2 days ago - loved it! It is unlike any city in the world - take a gondola ride, explore the alleys, it is amazing! We stayed in Florence 4 nights and we weren't as impressed with it as others - very crowded into one compact area. Lots to see there too but loved Venice the most!
