Hi Madeline. We were able to visit Pompeii in a day, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. We took the train down to Naples, visited a museum that now holds many Pompeii artifacts, then continued to Pompeii. I think we made it back to Rome around 9 or 10 p.m. I would definitely go again.
Ostia Antica would be our favorite, the fairly well-preserved ancient port of Rome. 30 minutes.

Orvieto, Assisi, Perugia, Cita di Bagno Reggio all possibilities farther afield. Also Villa d'Este coupled with Hadrian's Villa.

Some more details at www.twenj.com/romesightsexcurse
Madeline: Usually I'd say Ostia Antica but you'll probably do Pompeii and maybe Herculaneum from Sorrento (~25min & ~40min away by train) so I'd pass on Ostia. Tivoli/Hadrain's Villa is a *very* nice daytrip via Metro/bus. The Catacombs could be just a morning or afternoon trip, I'd recommend a bustour alot easier plus you must go thru as a group in 2 of them I believe. Also Florence is an easy daytrip, it's only 1:35 on the Eurostar train and the *majority* of sites are within a 20min walk. With reserved tickets you could visit the Uffizi and Accademia and still spend a few hours exploring the city. HTH Regards, Walter
