Day trips in the Veneto?
Anyone have suggestions for day trips near Castelfranco, hopefully by train? We'll be in Le Barchesse di Villa Corner timeshare for the week in Casavagra (?) and didn't plan to get a car. Do we Really need one? How expensive is a 12km taxi trip? Thanks to anyone who might have some insight into these questions! We travel in 43 days!

I would prefer to have a car because we like to wander the roads and see what we can discover. Last year we did a day trip from Venice to Bassano del Grappa by train and enjoyed the town but wished we had a car to see better scenery to and from.

All the places I mentioned can be reached by train (- or in the case of Asolo and Marostica a combination of train+bus) - from Castelfranco.
However, if you have to use a taxi to/from Castelfranco station each time, a hire car may be more convenient.

YOu might want to check with the property you're staying with and see if they have a free shuttle to Castelfranco. If they do, you can get by with out a car but may be at their mercy fo a time table. If not, check with them on taxi cost to Castelfranco and compare the cost for several trips to a car rental.
It's possible to get around the Veneto without a car but much more convenient to do so with one.

I also recommend renting a car - there are so many lovely things to see!
My votes:
- Bassano Del Grappa - visit the covered bridge and the Poli grappa museum
- Asolo - lovely!
- Conegliano - the old centre of town is a great walk
- drive the Prosecco road

Think of it this way: picture a small town in your home area. Now imagine a resort property 12km from the town. You want to see many places in the area. Would you want a car?
I sure would.
I'm curious as to why you didn't plan to get a car. Does the property advertise itself as being on a bus line, with a nearby stop?
I wouldn't want to have to rely on a taxi to come 12km from the nearest town, to take me into town, to get a train to go someplace else. What if the taxi isn't available, or late, and then you miss your train?
Then, you get back to the town with the train station, and now you have to hope for a taxi to be there, or come when called, to take you back to your timeshare resort. Meals? Groceries?
I sure would.

thanks sooooo much, everyone! i'll call the resort with questions tomorrow, as i'm told by someone who stayed there that two lovely ladies at the desk speak good English. Our travel companion is fluent in Italian, so that will certainly help! Will also look into adding a car to our existing reservation, if even for just a few days in the area. So appreciate everyone's ideas for sights, and will take them along!
