Day Trips from Siena with Rental Car

My husband and I will be in Siena for a few days in October. What are good day trips with our rental car? This will be our first time renting a car in Europe so any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi KWP - Lots of options. How far do you want to go? Pick any from:

Lucca - Pisa - San Gimignano - Orvieto - Cortona - Assisi - Montalcino - Pienza - Montecatini - Montepulciano - Chianciano - Pitigliano - Sorano - Sovana - Arezzo - Perugia - Todi - Volterra ... to name a few!

Hope this helps ...

Personally,I hate driving in and out of Siena. My first choice would be to park it and enjoy the city.
You can ,however, make day trips to many areas from Siena.
I'd head south. Where are you arriving from and where else are you staying on this trip?

My husband and I drove all over Italy, including to Siena. We had zero problems. I thought driving in Italy was easy. The hardest part for us was getting out of the Florence rental car parking lot.

Thanks for the suggestions. I welcome any more you might have.
Our itinerary is: Venice 4 nights, Cinque Terre 3 nights, Siena 7 nights, Assisi 1 night, Orvieto 2 nights, Rome 3 nights.
We have been to Florence and Rome on a previous trip.
We will be taking the train, but thought a rental car for 2 or 3 day trips out of Siena might be fun. I would guess we would be gone 10 - 12 hours each day.
