Day trips from Santorini

Hi there, I actually did it the other way round. Three years ago, my husband and I took a day trip from Crete to Santorini - ferry took 4 hours one way so set off EARLY. We left from Aghios Nicholaos (sp?) which itself is a lovely town for you to pull into (nice shopping). Crete is a huge island so for a day trip you would need to focus on what you want to see. There is the Palace of Knossos which I would highly recommend albeit there is a Minoan excavation on Santorini too. Would be fun maybe to see both, especially since they think the volcanic explosion on Santorini destroyed the palace on Crete!!
On the other hand, perhaps a drive into the interior which is STUNNING. Approaching the island by ferry is very exciting as Crete is far more mountainous than other islands in the Cyclades.
I'm going to Santorini for 7 days in August. I have been before but haven't been to Akrotiri. Will be very interested to see it though.

Thanks Ally. I have a 9 day tour- actually 6 in the islands- I'm wondering if I should base in Santorini and do a day trip or 2, or stay in Santorini for a few days and then another island- maybe Crete, Mykonos? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks

Hi Beatle,
When I was in Greece, I did 3 days on Santorini, 3 on Mykonos, and 1 1/2 days on Crete (this was somewhat of an accident due to a Greek airlines strike - we were supposed to spend more time on Crete).
I think it is easier to base in one island, see that island, and then go to another one - if those 3 are the ones you are choosing among. You can't go wrong with any of them. Crete is biggest and you could spend a lot more time there. But for 6 days, a 3/3 split with Santorini/Mykonos would be great.

Crete is nice as well as Rhodes but make sure you take the Super Fast ferries or you will be on a slow boat that is sure. Akrotiri was very small (the part that you tour) but if you are in Santorini you must check it out. There are a few museums in Fira that are worth a look too-very interesting.
