Ride the regular train to Diakopfto. From there catch the cog rail that winds up the narrow valley to Kalavryta. Gorgeous views.
Half way along the cog rail ride is the tiny town of Zahlorou. From there I hiked up the hill to Moni Mega Spileou. Uphill it took about 45 minutes.
I timed it to hike at Zahlorou, then continue the ride up to Kalavryta.
BTW I had the cheapest Manhattan drink of my life I think in Diakopfto. It was perfectlly prepared to boot. I ate at a rather traditional taverna that was excellent too.

From Patras it's pretty easy to get to Olympia, Epidavros, and Delfi so you get to a couple of the major historical sites. For something even closer Achia Klauss winery is very beautiful and they do give tours although I didn't get to take one when I was there.

Thanks for all the good ideas everyone, Indytravel, I checked out your post from your trip, sounds great! Counting the days till we leave on May 11th. We are meeting my sister and husband in Athens, they are retired teachers on an around the world tour. They started in San Francisco, Hawaii, Australia, Singapore, Dupai, Cairo and then we catch them in Athens, on to Patros for a week, then fly to Amsterdam, and train to Brussels, Cologne, back to Amsterdam and home. Oh, yes and we stay the first night in Paris before meeting them in Athens. We have traveled throughout the world with them and can't wait to be on our way again!
