I will be in Paris for 6 days in May. Please recommend the best day trips to take. And, if there are any wineries close enough to take a day trip, I would love some sugesstions.<BR>

Chartres, Giverny, Versailles - - for starters.<BR><BR>For wine, many people appreciate the champagne cellars of Reims as much or more than "vineyards" or other wineries.<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

We did Versailles (easily done on the local train), and we also did London thru Paris Vision Tours on Eurostar. Both were great!

Giverny--Monet's country home has beautiful gardens which should be in full bloom in May

There's Monet's house and gardens in Giverny, Chartres, Versailles, others, all easy to do from Paris. However, if you'll only be in Paris 6 days I wouldn't plan on leaving the city much if at all. I loved my day trip to Rouen. If you're interested I could send you my Paris Diary portion of that day trip. There are 3 beautiful cathedrals, many architecturally interesting buildings and museums. Looking back over different day trips I took I like this one best. E-mail me directly if you want my report.

I agree with Fred. With only six days in Paris I would try to limit the day trips. Versailles is an easy one day trip with a lot to see and only about an hour of travel time. Giverney is a half day trip, but will take over two hours of travel time. I would recommend spending that "travel time" in Paris.

I am going against the grain and I think 6 days are plenty in Paris. I lived in France for 3 years - 1 in Paris and 2 in Lyon. I must say that I am partial to Lyon (2 hours South of Paris via TGV). If you take the first train out of Paris and take the last train from Lyon to Paris, you'll have plenty of time to see a "real" French city. Paris is a bit too touristy, where true French culture is still preserved in Lyon. If you want more information just email me. But if the Lyon gig sounds too overwhelming, go for Reims and the champagne caves. Very intersting and fun.<BR>PS- May is the best time to visit France!

We were there 5 days, and did take a day trip on the TGV to Brussels. It was good. Once there we stopped in at the TI and did a self guided walk. It was relaxing, nothing to do or see, just wandered thru historic buildings, then the cathedral.

hi michael,<BR><BR>we went to paris in october for 6 nights. we spent 1/2 day at versailles and then a day at chartres. the chartres was wonderful and i wouldn't have missed seeing the french countryside, but we actually traveled there on the wrong day. most of the shops were closed on monday and tuesday and we went on a monday. <BR><BR>we left about 9am and got back in paris around 4pm. had a wonderful evening planned in paris.

Rex is right. Go to Reims and visit the Champagne cellars. It is a 90 minute train ride from paris and you could easily visit at least two champagne houses, Taittinger and Pommery have the best tours(adnmsiion <BR>about $6-8 US) You don't need a car but might want to take a cab to Taittinger-about 1.5 miles from train station. Pommery is just up the road.<BR>Have fun <BR>
