Day trips from Paris
My husband and I will be in Paris for 5 days in early June. Since we have both been there before we would like to also take the train for some day trips. Someone suggested Giverny - how far is that? Any other recommendations? (we've been to Versailles & Chartres)

Why not leave Paris for good for a night or two? Train to Brussels, fast and painless, where Ghent, Bruges and Leuven all await you, as easy excursions out into the Belgian "countryside" (not literally, none of these is actually rural - - just fascinating).
But as for Giverny (take the train to Vernon) - - sure, an excellent choice - - about 45 minutes from Gare St Lazare. See www.giverny.org for overview info about the connection between Vernon and Giverny and http://giverny.org/transpor/index.htm (note no "www") for more info on transportation.

If the Les Couriers Bretons bus is running out to Mont St Michel, take the TGV train to Rennes -- it's a great very do-able although long day. We did it in Sept thanks to info from this Forum and has become one of our best memories. Do a search for last summer's/fall's info on this. Do check that the Mont has not yet closed for restoration, though. If it hasn't, it may be your last chance for several years to visit it.

I am trying really hard to abide by the new "no sniping" spirit.
So maybe this is really a question from me on how to control the "urge" to "zing" someone else.
Don't you find it like fingernails on the blackboard when a questioner says "and we've already been to xxxxxxx" - - indicating that they are not seeking info about that place - - and a respondent comes back totally ignoring that info from the questioner?
What do YOU make of RJD offering the suggestion of Versailles as a "good second choice"?

June is a gorgeous time to visit Giverny, even if it rains.
At the above-mentioned website (see, I was paying attention, at least this time) you can look at a boat ride from Paris to Giverny and back again.

Wednesday is the lightest day in terms of crowds, but that doesn't mean it won't be crowded
By train: from Gare St Lazare, take train toward Rouen, get off at Vernon. The ticket/information office at St. Lazare SNCF station will give you an English brochure about Giverny as well as complete train and bus schedules.
From Vernon, take a bus or cab to Giverny.
If you go to Giverny on your own, try to avoid the days that Paris Vision and Cityrama run their tours, or at least go very early in the day before the buses arrive. If you can't avoid the bus tour days, or even if you go on a bus tour yourself, leave the crowds at the house when you arrive and follow the signs in the garden to the water lily pond (Bassin aux Nympheas). While the crowds are going through the house, you will see the pond and bridge with more tranquility. You can go through the house and gift shop before you leave.
Not far from Monet's house and garden is the Musee Americain at 99 rue Claude Monet.
It is also closed on Monday. The collection includes works by American impressionists.
