The "national" beer of Koln is Kolsch. The term is by law limited to beers made in Koln. Each brewhaus has its own taste. Fruh, Peters and Paffgen are some of the ones I remember from a "pub crawl" a few years ago. Fruh Haus is my favorite and I've enjoyed dinner outside on their patio a couple of times.

Haven't seen Worms on your list. Just spent a day there this past weekend, going on a tour about the Jewish History of Worms and then just a general overview of the town. Found the town lovely, the Dom is 1000 years old, and the Jewish history part was fascinating, as well as the Martin Luther and Reformation histoy.

It is easy to reach from Frankfurt and I think well worth your while to visit.

We spent a wonderful afternoon in Worms in 1988. It was my first European trip, my first step inside anything that old. I was greatly moved by the whole interplay of modern with old--there was a church fair going on and kids were setting up coke cans right against the 1000+year old cathedral walls and knocking them down and having a blast. There was something about the continuity of life that struck deep into my soul there. So I did consider a re-visit but have decided to try for new venues this trip. Thanks, Mainhattengirl, your advice and comments are extremely welcome coming from one who knows the whole area so well.

Actually, because of thinking to look at some other Luther/Protestant/Reformation history, I have decided to go to Speyer and Wartburg Castle. So current plan, not in any order, is Speyer, Wartburg, Heidelberg, Marburg, 2 different days on the Rhine, Koln, and Bamberg; then I will use a Day Pass for Mainz and reserve one whole longish day for Frankfurt. At least that's my plan for my 10 days as of today! I sure would like one whole other week at least! Any comments, Mainhattengirl?

I really think you would like Buedingen. It is truly my favorite little town in this area. Gelnhausen is right next to it so you could do both of those in one day.
