day trip to Morocco from Spain?
My friend and I will be staying in Nerja Spain in March and we'd like to go to Morocco. Is this feasible as a day trip (there are some tours)? Could we get there easily by local bus and ferry? Any suggestions of a great cheap hotel to overnight in? any suggestions on how to get around in Morocco and what to see would be appreciated.
I wouldn't recommend it if your option is a day trip over to Tangier.

We visited Tangier on an organized daytrip from Spain. The trip took all day, left at 5 am and returned very late in the evening. Most of the trip was transportation from Torremolinos to Tangier (bus, then ferry), from Nerja it would probably take even longer.

Once in Tangier they herd the tour groups through the city which I found to be dirty and not all that interesting. Then you go for the high pressure carpet sales pitch and lunch at a local restaurant. Back on the bus, they take you along with all the other buses for the photo op with a camel and then to another place for people to sell you stuff.

I ingored the advice of the folks on Fodor's and really wished I had listened so I could have enjoyed another day in Spain.

3rd vote for not doing a day trip; Tangier is the usual port of call, and really isn't a good representation of Morocco. Morocco deserves a minimum of 10 days. If you can get a cheap flight to Marrakesh, go there for 3 days, which gives you enough time to see the highlights.

If it's just a day trip I would not recommend it. There is not much to see in Tangier and I would be somewhat cautious if you are not with an organinzed tour. If you do plan to go for a few days I highly recommend it. I took the ferry from Algecerias with my brother and we then took a train to Marakessch. The train ride is somewhat long, and doesn't take the fastest route but it was well worth the trip. Once we got to Marakessch we took a tour down through th mountains and spent a night in the desert.

If you do take the train definitely get a sleeper, and bring a warm blanket. The train station is not far from the ferry terminal. Good luck.

I am not sure it's worth the effort for just a day either--it's a lot of travel for very little enjoyment. BUT, if you are still interested on such a trip I'd suggest looking at Rick Steve's Spain book or check it out on ricksteves.com. If a quickie trip is what you have in mind, he has good suggestions.
