Day trip to Manchester from London-doable on New Year day?
We have a cousin living in Manchester we have not seen for years and since NY day is a holiday, it's the best time to visit. Also we have only 2 free days in London(our tour ends in London). So, would transportation on NY day be a problem? Does anybody know the best way to get to Manchester?

It's a distance of 200 miles, plus or minus.
Here's the train site:

The train is a little faster than I thought. It looks like some routes take less than 3 hours each way. So a tiring day trip, but possible.

WillTravel, you're right. It is much cheaper to fly than to take the train. Cheapest by train was L200 return whilst BA offered L70 return. Thanks for the tip. Will be doing more research on this.

According to theTrainline.com, for January 1, 2004, you can buy Virgin Value 14 day advance tickets for £11 each way on certain departures. Comparing to air travel, I don't think you could even get to and from the airports for that price, let alone pay for a plane ticket.
These tickets will likely go fast; I wouldn't wait a long time to buy.
