Yes, would like to hear about trains/planes, and are there routine flights in the region (other than charter) or should we just plan on travelling from rome?
This may be our only chance to get to Sicily, how well we cover it is not much of an issue.
Thanks for your reply Grinisa.

What a crazy idea! Worth exploring for a minute or two.....
First thought-It is too far to drive, so you'll need to fly. Or do a night train.
If you want to check out the practical reality of the timing, There are a number of airlines that fly within Italia and connect to Sicily, like Windjet, AIrOne, Volare, Alitalia, etc.
here's a possibly helpful link:

Find out if there's a way to get from a city in Cent. Italy to Catania or Palermo and then the time to get to and from the Airport to one (and one only) site so you can set foot on SIcily soil for an hour or two. Or See if you can at least spend the night (Which would be slightly less crazy than the fly in-fly-out scenario.
Know also that these internal flights in Italy can sometimes be canceled without much, or any, advance warning. (It happened to me on Saturday with WIndjet). Factor that in and have a plan B. Also be aware that by rushing so fast in and out of Sicily, you will miss the all important element of the rhythms of life there, and only have time for barest scrapings of the surface, which is sure to leave you frustrated and yearning for more....
Then, If all that's worth it to you, try it! And I really hope you do so you can come back with an amazing Sicily-in-a-minute trip report!!
