D Day Tours! Too Late!!!

Unfortunately, we did not think ahead about the necessity of making a reservation for a D Day Tour! Battlebus is sold out and I haven't heard from Roel. Any other recommendations out there? I have tried "the Colonel" too...no response yet!
Help us if you can.
THANKS!

Relax. You can tour on your own if you have a car. The major sites are well marked and usually have information posted. Many guidebooks suggest intineraries and offer more detail. The museums along the way supply more. You can also do some research on your own. Try Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day.

If you still feel you need a guided tour, you can take one from Caen's War Memorial.

When i stopped by the Bayeux tourist office a few Augusts ago - high season they had brochures from at least a dozen similar tour companies and said they would have no trouble booking me on the spot that same day. so check with the tourist office as they book these to see if all are really booked.

Or hire a guide with car from the Tourist Information Centre. They charge by the carload, unlike the greedy bus operators.

There are well-posted self-drive itineraries throughout the area, detailing various special interests.

The museum at Caen also has minibus tours of the area and I believe you can reserve on line. (The website is www.memorial-caen.fr.) We didn't do that but hired Alain Chesnel from Bayeux at www. overlordtour.com from Bayeux. I highly recommend him. You can search his name the posts here for details of our daytrip from Paris in Sept 2004. And I agree, it would not be hard to do it on your own with a rental car, a few books (see if you can find the historical version Michelin map we had which shows the battle).

fodors site is being finicky today second time posting this to dieeat---- here is a site you might find helpful with a D-Day tour http://www.normandywebguide.com/AnChoixProduits.htm

we plan to use them in Sept as the owner of the B&B in Bayeux is one of their guides.

good luck, Deborah

It's pretty easy driving. I'd love to do a tour sometime, but we drove through the D-Day beach area with no problem.
