I will have somewhere between a half and a full day to see sights associated with the D-Day landings. With such a short amount of time, where would you recommend going?

Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc (where Rudder' Rangers made their assault) are in the same area; also the German bunkers that were taken in hand-to-hand combat can be seen; at low tide, pieces of armament are still visible. <BR>The American Cemetery is just up the beach. Hi!<BR><BR> How sad it is that you have only 1/2-1 day to visit the beaches. I agree with the previous person. See Omaha Beach and Pointe Du Hoc. Spend most of your time at Omaha Beach and take some serious time to visit the cemetery. First time I had cried in 20 years. Only then will you realize what these men achieved in the landings. Pointe Du Hoc craters from the bombers are still there as well as the gun emplacements, though our bombers did quite a job on them.<BR> Have fun, however, if you can extend your stay, there is a lot to see in all of the landing beaches.<BR><BR>Roger

Read (or re-read) Cornelius Ryan's The Longest Day before you go. It will help you understand more and appreciate the sites. It also serves as a good guide in describing life in the French villages and countryside during that time.

Arromanches still has some of the Mulberry Harbours in place, and has a good museum on the sea-front.
