Currency London, Paris, Rome

I've been reading on here that it's best to use debit cards and credit cards to pay for most things. I just want to ask if most tourist sites (such as Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, and places like that) take these forms of payment or do I need cash? Also, I'm from Canada, I heard somewhere that pin numbers in Europe for debit/ATM need to be 5 digits long, does anyone know if that's true?

Yes, most (if not all) tourist sites take credit cards. And my 4-digit PIN worked fine in ATM's in the three cities you mention.

Be aware that many credit cards have foreign transaction fees (Capital One does not). Personally, I just get cash from an ATM for walking-around money.

Hi nic,

I have 4 digit PINs on my CC and ATM cards. They all work.

No, you don't need cash in those places or anyplace else in the world these days for the most part. Your credit or debit card will work just fine. Just let your card company know in advance that you'll be traveling. You don't need a 5-digit PIN; a 4-digit one works just fine.

You will need cash for small purchases - a drink or snack, postcards or small souvenirs - if you do that and perhaps local transit. Almost everything else can be paid for via credit card.
