Crunch time in Stockholm

Ok I am sure I am going to get some pushback on my plan but just to give a bit of background. We have planned a trip covering many places for personal reasons. I know it would be better to have more time in each place but we don't so going to do the best we can with what we have
Here is what we are working with and after reading several posts and getting suggestions I am narrowing it all down to this
Arriving day one about 1PM
Spend the afternoon checking out Erickson Globe and walking around Sodermalm
Day 2 Cinderella boat to Sandhamn (full day)
Day 3 AM over to Djurgarden to Vasa Museum (if time ? may not have time)
around 1PM boat to Drottingholm and spend rest of afternoon there
Day 4 (we have till 3PM)
Drop luggage at train station and day touring of Gamla Stan
Places to visit (Cathedral, Medieval Museum,Royal Palace, pass by house of Nobility)
We are not huge fans of spending long times in museums--we mostly like architecture, nature--art but I think we know we have to give up something if we want to spend a day in the archipelago and that is of prime interest. BUt I realize we lose an entire day.
I don't know if we leave very early to go to Djurgarden will 2 hrs be enough time in the Vasa--I would think it might to get the main info -- We had thought to spend 5-6 hrs in Djurgarden and see more but then there is no way we can do the archipelago. I looked around for some shorter archipelago trips but there are some three hour trips but they barely get out into all the islands.
So my question is.. not are we crazy because we know we are but what might we realistically see in Gamla Stan in a day (9-3) and is there a compelling reason for us to give up the full day on the archipelago to do something else .. something maybe we are just not aware of given our interests.
This may be hard to answer but open to feedback
Thank you all

There were seven of us and we all thought 2 hours was sufficient time to visit the Vasa.

Great.. that is one piece of good news thank you
Its hard to judge how much time one will need to see someplace even in a basic way.
Still would love feedback on Gamla Stan and what we might be realistically able to do in our timeframe.
Also, if anyone has done the trip to Sandhamm and their thoughts on it.

I agree with colduphere that two hours is sufficient time to visit the Vasa. However I was glad to have squeezed the Video Show before strutting around the museum. If you are anything like me and didn't know much going in the video makes for a perfect back drop. Another highlight was seeing the remains beautifully encased and softly lit up. I think on the first floor. The whole place is fascinating. Peek into the windows on the second floor where you get a better look inside the warship. If I remember correctly you can download their audio app and listen with your smartphone.

enjoy!

Too bad you don't have time to visit Skansen - this is a wonderful recreation of Swedish life with docents demonstrating typical practices in previous times in earlier times - as well as a zoo of local animals.

"what might we realistically see in Gamla Stan in a day (9-3)"

IME, quite a lot! Riddarholmen, the Stockholm Cathedral, and just roaming around were my highest priorities for Gamla Stan, that and -- since the timing worked for me -- seeing the changing of the guard to the Palace. But truth in advertising, I didn't go into the palace itself, nor did I visit any of its museums. Obviously, the more of them you choose to visit -- and I'm sure some are quite worth seeing -- the more pressed your time. I would think it would be advisable to think through your priorities in advance so you can make wise decisions on the ground.

"is there a compelling reason for us to give up the full day on the archipelago to do something else"

Your call! I thoroughly enjoyed my half-day on the archipelago, and must admit that a half day was just within my personal ability to tolerate sitting still when on vacation. For me, anything longer would have had me itching to be out and about, seeing things I wouldn't otherwise see.... But that's just me. Your interests and preferences could be very different. I certainly thought being out in the archipelago a wonderful experience and highly recommend it!

Kja has given me the strength to admit that over three days we basically just wandered around Gamla Stan, though we did go the cathedral. We are suckers for walking narrow cobblestone alleys. And sitting in squares.

If you have nice weather you could have a very nice walk.

Thank you all so much for your input
Hi Kja THe day in the archipelago is actually two hours to Sandhamn then I think three hours on the island to walk around explore and gets some lunch and then boat back 2 hrs.. so it is a full day.. from the current schedule I don't see that we can get back earlier.. if we could I might take an earlier boat after some lunch and a stroll around.. but I think either way we use a day. I do see some museums are open till late at night like the photography museum..

also like colduphere we love to walk around the streets as well and will do that on Thursday afternoon and evening the first day.. I know the other two days will be busy but I think its priority nytraveler although we would like to see Skansen, I think we really want to see the archipelago more so I guess that is a trade off. I guess you are right about prioritizing.. in Gamla Stan also marking things on google maps to get an idea of where all things re in realation to each other and plan the day so we go in some kind of order of nearest to make the most of our time. Sigh.. I fear we will be dealing with this issue everywhere we go but plan to just enjoy whatever we have time for and not worry about it

Try to squeeze in the Vasa. I don't think you'll regret it.

I just re-read your post and noticed that you aren't planning to visit Stockholm's City Hall -- and that might make sense for you! But I thought I would mention it because I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I think, though, that it can only be visited by guided tour, which complicates matters when you have so little time in the city.

Stockholm is, IMO, an absolutely glorious city and I'm sure your plans will leave you with many wonderful memories.

I am not saying that a boat trip to Sandhamn is a bad idea. Sandhamn is quite far out in the archipelago and the Cinderella boats are modern, comfortable and fast but in my opinion they have no charm.

Have you considered going on a lunch cruise? Check out this link:

http://www.stromma.se/en/stockholm/d...se-to-vaxholm/

On a lunch cruise you don't go as far out as Sandhamn but the trip is very scenic and the boat has, in my opinion, much more charm and atmosphere than a Cinderella boat.

I would skip the Ericsson Globe Arena. Agree with Kja that the City Hall is worth seeing. Check out the schedule for tours in English and the schedule for boats to Drottningholm Royal Palace. The boats to Drottningholm depart from the dock next to the City Hall. So with a little planning you can combine the City Hall with Drottningholm Royal Palace. At Drottningholm, next to the royal palace, there is an old theatre which is interesting and worth visiting if you have time. See link:
