thanks, issy, for a wonderful trip report. my husband and i are going to croatia in sept. and i have been trying to do as much research as possible. up until now, i have only looked on LP and found no helpful trip reports, bc they were all about hostels and how to travel as cheaply as possible. it was soo nice to finally find a review of how to do it up a bit nicer in croatia (not that i have anything against hostels...did that when i was younger myself). anyhow, just wanted to say thanks again. i think im a fodor convert now!

Issy...photos are magnif!! The Plitvice shots made me want to hop a plane and go back. I first discovered Plitvice in 1980 (when Tito was alive and it was all Yugoslavia)....my wife and I were among only a half dozen people walking the paths in those days...only one little boat was running ...was there again last year and was amazed at the changes...But, it is still a wonder of the world. Thank you again..

Hi rcormier - and WELCOME to Fodors!

We have a few folks going to Croatia in September - me included - and would love to hear what your plans are. Feel free to start a thread when you get comfortable. You don't necessarily have to have a question - we are all just so excited to travel that we want to say it loud and say it proud!

That's a name from my neck of the woods, la belle province de Quebec. As per September in Croatia, share your itinerary so we may be able to meet along the way. We're starting in Slovenia on the 12th & flying back from Dubrovnik on the 30th.

What a super trip! We are off in 2 weeks, driving from Germnay to Croatia in our own car.

We only have two weeks and intend to travel from Pula to Split.

What are the roads like to drive on - is the travelling time good???

What have had interesting driving experiences in Poland and New Zealand where 100km took us 3 hours!

Any hints with the driving would be super.

We did fine driving in Croatia last week but it will take longer than the estimates on michelin.com suggest. One tip is that on the toll road, when you come to a tunnel, a few times, the tunnel is only open going one direction. This means that the 2 lanes in each direction narrows to 1 lane in each direction, so both can use the 1 tunnel available. This caused us an 1 1/2 hour back up going from Trogir to Plitvicka national park. Also, there are not as many gas stations as you are used to. There are not enough for all the cars driving their roads in the summer. We had long waits to get gas, since many from Poland, Hungary and the CR, are visiting with their cars. The gas stations are required to stay open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day in July and August. The tolls are low and the road is just great! Scenery really nice also. Make sure you have a good map. I bought mine from Rough Guide and was very happy with it. The signs off the toll roads are not always to good. You must pay close attention to where you want to go!

For those of you who are going to Croatia, you might be interested in reading the article which appeared in today's Baltimore Sun.

There's also an article about Dubrovnik in today's NYTimes.

We visited this area several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Issy thanks so much for the report. I went to Croatia every summer as a kid and stayed in the hotel Argentina back when it wasn't anywhere near as nicely decorated but the views and terraces were still phenomenal. The villa Scheherzade (sp?) was our favorite place to play in. In all those years though I don't think we made the discoveries that you did in a few weeks! Thanks for bringing back the memories.
