Croatia vs Prague Trip - help me decide!!!
Plan to leave in July; they are different areas with much different type of sites to see. Happy to visit either. I am a single female traveler, looking to explore but haven't decided which one to visit and with little time to decide. I was wondering if anyone has input on which one would be a better fit for me as I usually stay in inexpensive hostels, etc. and enjoy spending my money on the tours/sights. Question: Which one will I get more for my money, using US dollars?
Thanks!
Thanks!

What a difficult choice! I personally am enamoured with both destinations. You can easily do both in inexpensive accommodations especially outside Prague and Dubrovnik. Would you be renting a car?
If you want startling and dramatic beauty with coastal scenery choose Croatia. If you want to architecture Prague and Telc would be great. Both are busy in July and August.
If I were going alone to the Czech Republic I would do Prague for 3-4 days, see a castle or two and head to Cesky Krumlov and Telc. Kutna Hora is interesting, too, as is Olomouc.
If I were going alone to Croatia I would do Istria, basing in Rovinj, see the hilltowns and work my way down to Plitvice Lakes, Trogir and Dubrovnik with half a day in Split. I would also try to hit one of the islands, depending on what you like.
In both you could stay in private accommodations for 50 euros a night or less. My husband and I have paid as little as 30 euros for a lovely house in the Istrian countryside and 40 euros for an apartment in Telc. Both offer interesting history and culture.

I will definitely save your info, it sounds like money wise for either place, accommodations would be about the same. I don't like paying too much and don't need much (have no problems with the bathrooms down the hall, not sure if there are hostels type places in either place) because I like to get up early and hit the road for the entire day. I will but a travel book to start the planning once I decide where to go...

I'd be interested to know which you choose - please keep us updated! I guess it depends on what your goals are for the trip - what sort of things you want to see as each country is so uniquely different from the other.

Since you didn't say how many days or weeks you will spend on this trip, I would be hard pressed to make a recommendation. With a limited amount of time (say a week or less) I would simply go to Prague and try to explore some of the surrounding areas. With more time, I would travel through as much of Croatia as possible. I can imagine that your final decision must be very soon, as you apparently don't have air reservations yet either. Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I decided to go to Prague; Croatia looks beautiful but since I am traveling alone, Croatia looks like a lot of driving to see all the beauty it has to offer with regards to the scenic views. I think I would like to have a traveling partner for Croatia. I am tentatively booked for Barcelona (13 days) and on to Prague (16 days). I had entertained the thought of switching, but since it is the season for traveling I better keep what I have. I will buy my travel guides... Off I go!!

Hi Catherine; Now that you have decide on Prague, this is a good web site for information. Click on the city and then 'instant' for a download. www.inyourpocket.com/ Also, go to amazon.com to buy your travel books. Usually, they are discounted and over a certain amount, you might get free shipping. 'Eyewitness guide' has a good book for Barcelonia. iris1745/dick

We had a wonderful personal guide for a day in Prague. She was very affordable and a great person. Let me know if you are interested in her information. Also, will you be able to go to Cesky Krumlov? It is one of the most amazing places that we have ever been to. We had an awesome guide there too, and stayed in an incredibly quaint bed and breakfast with an outstanding view of the castle.

I will be in Novy Jicin for a week in May. I will fly into Ostrava on the 10th. I heard the 15th is a holiday in CR. Is this correct and what does it mean as far as traveling, accomodations, etc.? I'm done in Novy Jicin on the 14th and thinking of flying out of Prague on the 17th. I like the idea of tour guide for the day - do they do this for 1 person? I read the spa's in Jesenik are good. Does anyone have any knowledge of those? Can I go by train to Jesenik and then onto Prague? Or should I just focus on Prague?

kburkhal - Our guide in Prague was Eva Trkalova. [email protected]. Id think she would do a tour for one person, it might just cost a little more. It was just my husband and myself on the tour, and it was great because she completely customized to our interests. I thought her price was very reasonable for what we got.

prague is hot in summer
id go to croatia and soak up the sun
we travelled in june 06 to both places and i definitely prefer croatia
it was very reasonable
we averaged 25 euros a night on apartment accommodation ( 2006 rates) but youd have to book in advance for june
if you decide on prague then you dont need a guide- just google walks in prague and read up on it ( of course it is up to you)
i believe they have free city walks - somewhere round the astronomical clock but that may have changed
we did the petrin park walk one day
and went to cesky krumlov by train another day
still prefer croatia because of the natural beauty and the people
but i do admit prague has beautiful architecture - the river was dirty the streets very littered ( but someone said there was a big clean up recently)
i found the place seedy and just basically unkempt
