Croatia & Slovenia- sample itinerary???
Does anyone have an example of a Croatia/Slovenia itinerary? We're thinking of making it our destination for June '07! We would like to travel for 10-12 days... is this a decent amount of time for these areas? I realize there is a wealth of information out there... I will swing by a bookstore this coming weekend!
We'll be using FF miles on what I assume will be an open jaw ticket.. so those will need to get booked pretty soon.
I'm a huge Rick Steves fan... is there another book I should consider for this region?
TIA!

Hi, I've just started planning a trip to Slovenia and Istria for May. We are going to leave southern Croatia, Dubrovnik and the islands for another time. We have spent a short time there and it is really beautiful. I did buy a guide book today. Fodors Croatia & Slovenia. I was wondering about Rick Steves also. His Europe book doesn't even cover either country. Oh well, try the web site. I'm going to. Someone on this board told me about traveltimeny.com. Look at it. Great photo gallery of Slovenia and Croatia. Good luck.

No. Lots of meat in Slovenia. A bit less in Croatia but still meat, esp. pork, is very popular. Now, if you are vegetarian, you may have a problem.
I like zwho's idea to leave Southern Croatia and islands for another time. There is so much to see in Slovenia and northern Croatia that 10-12 days would go by so quickly. A quick list of the destinations I like are:
1) Ljubljana
2) Bled and Bohinj
3) Soca River Valley
4) Goriska Brda
5) Logarska Dolina
6) Piran and Portoroz
7)Postojna and/or Skocjan caves
8)Istria and over to Brunij islands
and if you have time left over...
Plivitce.
Cheers,
Jan in Ljubljana

I think seafood is a biggie in these countries, but so is pasta and pizzas, and there is always, bread & cheese and salads! I'm not a big fish or seafood fan and I just returned from Southern Spain, (the Mediterranean). Lots of bread, cheese, and salads!

SloJan,
"And if you have time, Plitvice?" I would put Plitvice as one of the highlites of our trip. I've travelled to many countries & have yet to see such natural beauty. The magnificent fall coloured leaves as a background to the turquoise lakes is breathtaking. The only negative is the hordes of tour groups (similar to what we encountered in Dubrovnik).

Hi
We traveled several years ago from Ljubjana by car to Piran on the coast. Piran is a very nice town on the coast. It's very Italian and bilingual. We had seafood while there as we enjoy it. From there it's a fairly short drive to Istria in Croatia. We stayed in both Porec [Nono for great pizza] and Rovinj. Stayed about a week there and drove to Trogir. It's a long drive, back then, the freeway was not yet built and it took several hours beautiful scenary, with the islands in the Adriatic. Got boring after a couple of hours.. We saw buildings along the way that looked like they had been bombed during the war. Trogir was a very nice place, very heavily touristed, so after two nights, we drove back to Istria. Enjoyed Rovinj very much, the hotel was a a short walk to the town. Very beautiful place. Nice people. They were glad to see Americans they told us.
