Germany hotel recommendation in Frankfurt - Heidelberg area

Traveling to Germany for a week in December, flying in and out of Frankfurt.

We want to stay in a smaller town/city for three nights.

Will have a car and need to be at the airport at 7:30 AM for our morning departure.

Thinking about staying in Worms, Darmstadt or Michelstadt.

So far, haven't found a hotel that appeals, based on internet searches.

I'm looking for a place that is in/near the center of town. Prefer a more traditional place to a newly built hotel. More interested in the ambiance than the price - we've stayed in two, three and four stars.

I'm hoping you can offer suggestions of places you enjoyed.

Thanks!

Try the Dom Hotel in Worms. Stayed there last week. €95 a twin room.

I stayed in the little town of Seligenstadt on the Main river 25km from Frankfurt some two years ago and was very satisfied with my choiceof location.

But I can not for the life of me remember where I stayed - it would have been a Ferienwohnung (= holiday apartment) though, as this is my preferred type of accommodation in Germany.

Seligenstadt is connected to the airport by a major freeway (Autobahn No.3), which means a trip of around 15 minutes.

For a 3 day time period, I would stay at the Castle Hotel Hornberg in Neckarzimmern. This is a terrific property with views of the grape terraces and the Neckar below. You can tour and tast the Castle winery - we ended up shipping a bunch of wine home. You can also learn about the castle on tours that are given. Dinner in the hotel dining room, with a table window overlooking the Neckar below, cannot be beat. You can also visit Heidelberg which is about an hour north. For the early morning flight, I would get rid of my car the nite before and stay at an aiport hotel, like the Sheraton or the Steigenberger, for their ease of location.

Thanks Harzer and Emily,

Two towns that we hadn't considered. Will check out Seligenstadt and Neckarzimmern. The castle hotel sounds like a very special place.

Much appreciated.
