Creating your own travel web pages

Every now and again a Fodorite mentions their own website as a reference for more info on their latest trip. Besides being helpful and informative, your websites are yet another way to share the love of travel which infuses this message board.

I'd like to try my hand at creating my own travel pages when we come back from our trip this summer, but I've never done it before. Can anyone offer advice on how to do it - or suggestions on how to do it well (layout, graphics, animation, etc.)? Do I need special software?

Also, if you have a great travel website and you want to share it, please do! I'd love to get inspired!

It's easy to get started, though plan on a lot of time if you really get into it.

Lots of simple tools that you could start with. If you use GeoCities or Tripod (or others) they supply (pretty basic) tools to build pages and upload them to the server.

If you want to build your own independent of one of these "community" services you find lots of tools, many free at www.tucows.com Pick your operating system and go to the "HTML Tools" section where you'll find many editors among other things.

We started out with one of the simple 'build your own homepage' template programs four years ago and rapidly moved to bigger and better (well, more complicated anyway) tools. We use FrontPage, WS_FTP, TextPad, Adobe ImageStyler, Photo-Paint, Search and Replace and a few other things by now.

The technology isn't the most important thing, though. What do you want from your site? How do your want to affect people who visit?

Other issues: ease of navigation about your site; attracting visitors; speed of loading; usefulness to folks using a wide variety of browsers, computers and communication speeds.

That's a very short answer to what could be a several semester adult ed course.

Our site's at http://twenj.com/ and gets about 1,000 visits/day. If we can help with more questions drop us an e-mail.

Ed

I created mine (http://sites.netscape.net/monicapileggi/homepage) from Netscape. It's free and I get up to 11-12 megs to use. It's pretty simple to use.

I'm working on one via Netscape:
http://sites.netscape.net/dmykonos
It's still under construction. I have an old one which you can find under s.fowler's page. Focus is primarily Greece and Italy until I can find the time to devote.
