I am glad you found the info helpful; your trip appears to be shaping up very nicely!!

There is a bus from Amalfi to Bomerano; many people attempting these walks take the bus to the highest point and walk downhill.

I also think the idea of the short-term car rental in the Cilento is a good idea..

Please keep us posted as you formalize your plans--I'd llike to return to the Amalfi area someday soon and would like to do some exploring further afield next time..

If, for some reason, you want to spend the night at the top of the trail, in Agerola, I found at B&B, Nonna Martina, listed in the SlowFood guide, and this hotel:

I didn't write a trip report - I only just really found these various travel forums when we were planning that trip as we have spent the last twenty years on bus men's holidays in France where we used to live - so I'd had no need to consult. I didn't fully grasp the trip report culture then!
We rented a small house in Santa Maria - basic but delightful in terms of our needs. Review here:

http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/vr/review.asp?n=2904

We might stay there next summer too but we are looking around a bit in Santa Maria and San Marco to see what else is on offer now we have a precise sense of the place. Our children are immensely skeptical of anything else because they loved it so much at this place.

We came to SM after a busy few days in France and Pompeii/Sorrento, so we did a lot of relaxing on the beach and snorkeling, and limited exploring - wonderful trips to Paestum (extraordinary) and Amalfi (beautiful but too overcrowded with tourists, although we caught the bus up to Ravello which was cool, calm and lovely, and then hiked down to Atrani - absolutely extraordinary walk, one of the highlights of our life literally. We walked back to Amalfi from Atrani through the various pedestrian streets and that was amazing - away from the tourist crowds). We drove south to Acciaroli one day but were disappointed - still basically out of season and very quiet, but the drive there had made me feel ill so perhaps that wasn't the best day for me to judge! We are very interested in antiquity and so we are planning to go south to Velia next time. We didn't go inland in the Cilento at all except up the hill to Castellabate itself.

Well, this post was initiated by myself way back in December. In the meantime, among other things, we did go to Italy and stayed for 49 days in Agropoli.

I feel I should post a final entry, as feed back to my original question.

As far as we are concerned, Agropoli functioned very well as a basis to explore the Campania region.

During that period, we managed to cover the following spots:

Naples itself (a few times), the Solfatara volcano in Pozzuoli, the Vesuvio, Pompei, Ercolano, Salerno, Paestum, Caserta, Cetara, Vietri Sul Mare, Ravello, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento.

The big absence in the above list is Capri, but that should be fixed in another trip

Even though it was just my wife and I, we rented a nice three bedroom apartment a little outside of the city centre for slightly under 1000 euros for the period from 15th March to 04th June (49 days).

If we could be well accomodated in Sorrento, for say an additional 500 euros for the period, I would have rather stayed in Sorrento, or Salerno for that matter, than in Agropoli. But certainly no more than 500 euros extra.

We usually left Agropoli on the 08:40 train, which left us in Salerno at about 09:20 or in Naples at about 10:10 and from there on we headed to our final destination.

The trains were just fine in order to cover the whole area. In fact, they were probably more convenient than even renting a car: Paestum, Pompei, Caserta are just a few yards distance from their respective Trenitalia Stations.

Sorrento, Pozzuoli, Ercolano are also very easily reached using the Circumvesuviana railway.

The bus to Amalfi left just outside the Salerno station and the boat leaving from Salerno to Amalfi/Positano is also pretty close the Salerno Station.

We initially thought we would use Salerno as our switcheroo for day trips, but we actually ended up using Naples more often than Salerno for our trips.

I will be happy to answer any questions regarding this
topic and if there is demand will post a more detailed report on our stay.

I considered quite seriously the Sentiero dei Dei. But... after having walked down from Ravello to Minori, and the aches felt for the following few days I thought wiser let it pass...

Once more, thanks to all the people who took their time answering my original post.

I think it's a tremendous burden to write trip reports, but no doubt any kind of information you could share would be a great benefit. Most people are afraid to venture south of Amalfi, and most people are afraid to go to Napoli. The experiences of two traverlers such as yourselves would be interesting.

Do you think you could have found equivalent accommodations in Salerno?
