Corfu parking ticket--watch out!
Flying in late at night, our hotel was right downtown. We had a rental car and there were no parking spaces as Corfu Town is a very lively place. After making a cirlce tour several times, I came across a parking area and found a spot.
The next morning we come to found out that we had parked in a "bus zone." We not only recieved a parking ticket, but the police took our licence plates. The bus driver told us that the police office was in the center of town.
We found another parking spot and hoped that no one would "double-park" near us--a commom situation.
We walked into Corfu Town as it is a maize of pedestrian streets. We first went to our hotel manager and he said the fine was for $125 U.S.
After getting several different directions we finally found the police-office. It turned out that we needed the "municipal police." So, we hoofed it to another office (after asking again several times for directions) and found the Municipal Police. They told us we had to go to another office to "pay" the fine.
On foot we finally found the "Border Police" to help us find the right building to pay our fine. A long discussion took place between four guys and a cell call: "You need to go down this street, and the building you want may be under reconstruction."
We finally found the building and the first office sent us to a second office and that office sent us to a third office. Because we paid early, we saved 40 euroes.
I now know what is meant by "Greek bureaucracy."
We finally went back to the Municipal police office and waited another hour for our plates. The officer who snagged our plates came in with a arm-full of plates. They make a lot of money on this procedure!
All the people we met were nice and pleasant. It took about three hours in total.
When we finally made it back to our car: someone had double-parked right next to us.
The last time we were in Greece we had not paid our Monavassia parking fine. The Corfu Municipal police are very cleaver on taking the plates!
