Copenhagen hotels

Does anyone have any personal experience with any of the following hotels: Palace; Sophie Amalie, Admiral; Strand. We will be in Copenhagen in June, 2003 and are trying to decide on which hotel to book. We are particularly interested in comments regarding rooms and location. Thanks.

Sandy,

I have stayed at the Sophie Amalie many times accompanying my husband on business. If going there on vacation, I would stay there as well.

I found the location to be excellent for a couple of reasons. It is next to the waterfront area that has a wonderful walking area the length of the harbor. Great for a run in the morning if that's your interest, or for walking as well. Goes from the hotel to the "mermaid" and beyond, past the palace.

The hotel is also a very short walking distance from the Stroget which is the pedestrian walking/shopping street.

The rooms are quite ample and furnished in that sparse Danish style. We always tried to get a room facing the water so we could see the ferries coming and going. If you are noise-averse, this could be a problem as they do sound their horns as they pull into port. I found that very nice, but I can see how one might not.

Since you will be there in June, it will be light early and late. This is great when you are awake, and not when you want to sleep. The rooms have excellent black-out drapes.

Rooms have hair dryers, TV with BBC channels, very firm platform beds. Remember to bring a washcloth if that is important to you.

Staff is excellent. Buffet breakfast, should you choose that, is very good.

Copenhagen is a great city in which to be a tourist. Wonderful restaurants. Have a great trip!

I've stayed at the Palace, Sophie Amalie, and the Admiral.

Palace: A little worn around the edges, very popular with Japanese tour groups, front facing rooms have interesting views of the Town Hall Square . . . but the street noise on the front facing rooms can be a pain in the rear. Good location, near one end of the Stroget (pedestrian shopping street), Tivoli, and in the old city of Copenhagen.

Sophie Amalie: recently remodeled (2000) and actually adjoins the Admiral. Small lobby, breakfast buffet is outstanding, and as Lisa states, rooms are sparsely decorated. Again, the street facing rooms can be very noisy.

Admiral: Slightly larger rooms than the Sophie Amalie, and a little pricier. Both the Admiral and Sophie Amalie are in very good locations, near Nyhavn and Amalienborg Palace and the changing of the guard.

My favorites in more or less the same price range:

Neptune - near Sophie A/Admiral in

Nyhavn. Nice restaurant, good location, very comfortable room (there's a mix of large and small rooms for the same price, go figure?)

Kong Frederik. Owned by the same people that own the Sophie Amalie. A little worn in some areas, but I like the location (not far from the Palace, and without the large tour groups).

71 Nyhavn: Beamed ceilings, in Nyhavn and some rooms face the water. Good restaurant, excellent breakfast buffet.

I have stayed at all of these hotels for at least one week. However, I now stay exclusively at the Radisson Scandinavia which is about a mile south of the Town Hall Square. It has none of the charm of the 71 Nyhavn or Kong Frederik. It is a business hotel. 24 hour room service, the best lobby bar in the world, 3 very good restaurants and a Casino. In the last 3 years I've spent a combined 5 months in this hotel. Special rates can make the room as low as $150 / night. Again, it's a very large business hotel with lots of tour groups . . . the difference to me is that the Palace tends to cater to the tour groups, the Scandinavia caters to me.

Find Grayfriar's Square (Gråbrødre Torv) just off of the Stroget and have a meal at Peder Oxe or one of the several outdoor restaruants there. It is my favorite part of Europe.

Have fun.

The I near the train station reserved
Strand for my request: safe, quiet
and not so expensive. And the hotel
was exactly that. It is facing the
waterway, a few blocks away from
Nyhaven and I enjoyed strolling by
the water every morning. My single
room had a TV with international channels, internet connection with fee,
no hair dryer, but tons of towels.
To me, it looked like a decent no nonsense hotel.

I spent my wedding weekend ( 5 March 02)at the Hotel Admiral in Copenhagen. It is a very nice hotel but it is designed for the business traveler with a generous expense account. We paid 184.00 for a standard room (nothing special) and breakfast was an extra 15.00 per person. When I confirmed my reservation, I inquired about just getting a cup of coffee in the morning. I was told that this was no problem and there would be no charge. Great, the first morning I go to the breakfast room and ask for a cup of coffee. The waiter then tells me that will be 15.00, whether I eat the buffet or just drink a cup of coffee. When I showed him the email stating that I could get a cup of coffee, he told me that the reservation girl, was wrong. So needless to say I had to walk a few blocks to the 7-11 and get a cup there for a few bucks. This town is expensive and very interesting. The hotel I would not stay in again. The location is good but very difficult to find if you are driving (which we were). Our room also looked out over the fun ship all weekend (Oslo-Copenhagen run). Overall, I would rate the town a 10 and the hotel a 5. Also, check in was slow as they were more interested in their business guests, who keep jumping in front of us. I finally said something and a clerk, then proceeded to check us in. Jusy my humble opinion. They were very nice to our little dog and even made an exception to their dog policy, which they have since reviewed and now allow dogs.
