Since you've posted on the europe board presumably that's what you're thinking of.
You need to start with some research. Have a look at some Let's Go Guides - or the Thorn Tree section of the Lonely Planet website. They have lots of info for impecunious students.

Go to www.contiki.com. Review the various trips. Pick one long one or, better yet, two or more to string together with a short gap in between for independent travel or travel with your new temporary friends.
I'd avoid the budget trips, but I first went on a Contiki trip when I was 26 and a professional with a little bit of money, not a collegian.
Enjoy.
At worst, if you're not liking the notion of taking a tour, then the Contiki site will give you some concepts of what you want to see and you can come back and pelt the board with specific questions.
