I stayed at a convent near the Spanish Steps. Cheap. bare-bone basic, clean, included simple breakfest, could walk to much of historic Rome. Nuns spoke only Italian. Reserve by faxing. They will ask for a deposit to be mailed to them. There is an elevator to the top of the S. steps located just as you exit the metro (Spaga stop)so you don't have to carry lugguage up steps. For list of convents go to www.santasusanna.org/comingtorome/convents
