Convenient Mountain Town

Hello,
We will be traveling from through Switzerland via the train in mid June. I am looking for town/village to stop and hike, toboggan, and generally enjoy the views for one night. We are open with our routing, just need to make it to France by June 15th.
Any suggestions? We are a family of four, two teenage boys and parents.
Budget - 300.00 USD
Thank you!
Katie in Ca.

You might look into your options in Wengen.

Hi Katelittle,

Just one thing to note -- a mountain town isn't necessarily going to be convenient. Obviously, mountain town will sit up in the mountains, and that usually means at least a 20-minute train ride from the convenient hub down in the valley. In you opt to stay down at the convenient hub, you'd need to take that 20-minute ride up to the mountains for the views, for hiking, and for tobogganing.

Where will you be coming from? Are you flying into Zürich, or will you be coming from elsewhere in Europe? Finding a mountain town that will be somewhere close to your route will depend on exactly what your route is.

But having said all that, yes, Wengen, mentioned by kja above, is always a good bet. It is a car-free town perched up in the mountains over the Lauberbrunnen valley, with views over to the other mountains and down the valley. You have hiking on your doorstop.

Other beautiful towns in/near the mountains that I've enjoyed are Gstaad, Zuoz, Guarda, Pontresina, Scuol, and Bettmeralp. I'm sure that others here will post their favorites, so you'll be spoiled for choice!

Have fun as you plan!

Wherever you come from, the timetables for the Swiss railways are at www.sbb.ch/en (English version), and for any mountain town one or several changes of trains will be inevitable, possibly even the use of a postal bus (a network of coaches that go where trains can't/don't go). Again - "convenient" is not likely to be the case.

Note that changes of trains are usually very easy - connections are timed to the minute - if it takes one minute to walk from the arrival track 1 to the departure track two, the timetable may show a stop-over time of two minutes (allowing for people who move slowly).

I don't know about any toboggan run open in June. For summer skiing, go to Zermatt.
Be aware that June is a rather rainy month in the Alps. May be you will see nothing but fog and clouds.
But where will you enter Switzerland and where will you leave it. It makes a big difference whether the border post to France is Vallocine/Chamonix or Basel.
