http://www.bayerisch-schenken.de/bay...un+t-shirt.htm

It's a joke. And a statement. Nor really for monarchy. More for beer and Schweinshaxe and a good time.

However, it's outdated. From now, we wear T-shirts with "Unterwegs im Namen des Bundestrainers". Period.

sorry that your intestinal problems interfered with your fun Peg. Having suffered albeit briefly from something similar on our trip to OZ I can really sympathise.

Which King is it, traveller? I'm afraid that my knowledge of 19C ? german kings is a bit ropey [if he IS a 19C one]. and why a King anyway? All these questions probably indicate that I haven't really got the joke!

Thanks for the hotel recommendations for Wernigerode, Ingo. The Anger looks like our sort of place, but as we would be staying on my birthday, we might splash out; do you know if the Gothisches Haus has parking? I couldn't find it on the website.

Sorry to hijack your thread a tad Peg, but thank you for the info about Wernigerode. No bookings made as yet but the plan is gradually forming.

There is a parking garage next to Gothisches Haus, but it's expensive (doesn't belong to the hotel) - I paid 12 Euro per night, and I think I even got a deal on that from the hotel. Otherwise no parking in the vicinity, sorry.

Pegontheroad-- I'm presently going to the Goethe Institut in Montreal (A1.2) und ich mag beide das Institut und meinen Deutschkurs! What a fun way to meet people while you're in Germany and to get a full month's immersion at the same time. That's what I'm hoping to do next summer (or something similar) in the Netherlands. I'll bet your German has improved a lot!

Best wishes, Daniel

Sounds like you had good fun, peg -- aside from the immodium issue..

And yes, guys (not necessarily only actual fathers) do celebrate Father's Day on Himmelfahrt with that kind of excursions. In cities, it's usually a pub crawl. In rural areas, the males will hike around their villages with a cart full of beer in tow. Actually, the whole "celebrations" have more to do with beer than fatherhood, anyway ;-)

If I had to guess, the guys with the Mad King Ludwig t-shirts had probably been a bachelor's party. It's quite common now that the groom's buddies (same for the bride's female friends) sport the same shirts on the last day of freedom. Often the text of those shirts often plays with the groom's or bride's names, so the groom's last name could have been König/King and his buddies were now on their way for/with their King. But that's just a wild guess..

I think it's Ludwig of Bavaria (Mad King Ludwig), who built Neuschwanstein, and who is a bit of a cult figure. He is 19th C. If you look at the link traveler1959 posted, the t-shirts are with a whole lot of other Bavarian memorabilia (not my cup of tea at all).
