the name I am looking for is not his nom de plume. He was friends with Picasso, Henry Miller, Sartre, and others.

Ok, looks like Gyula Halasz (hm...., 6 letters?) in Brasso. Subject is bijoux or jewels? I guess this refers to the necklace in the Titanic?

That's it!
The Eye of Paris, Brassai was born Guyla Halez (spelling varies depending on the source) was born in Brasov, (depends on the language) Hungry (Rumania) in 1899. One of his most recognized subjects was Mme Bijoux, which was copied as a drawing by Jack in Titanic.
111op it is over to you.

You know, Google is very useful when you can figure out what to feed it. But I didn't know that Jack actually did a copy of that Madame Bijoux. I did guess the medium was photography, but I was just looking at five-letter photographers (so letter count is very important ).

I'll just give an easy one. My brain has been fried by the difficult clues.

A very recent death brings to mind this woman (first name = 8 letters, #4 = a, last name = 8 letters), who some would argue that her contributions to a very important breakthrough were slighted.

That sentence wasn't really very grammatical. But you see what I mean.

The breakthrough was in science.

I'm confused (again)!
Is the woman still alive or is she the one who recently died?

yk, the vagueness is part of the fun of this all, of course.

Yes, wombat, it's Rosalind Franklin, of course.

Of course, the recent death I'm referring to is Crick's death (co-discoverer of the structure of DNA as a double helix). Rosalind Franklin took the crystallography pictures. She died at 37 of cancer or something like that.

Now wombat, make sure you count properly this time.

The first three words are part of a chain. The last word is the birth place of the person whose first name is that third word in the chain

First word 4 letters. It is a river

Second word 5 letters (same first 4 letters as the first word). It is a place in the western isles

Third word 6 letters (same first 5 letters as in the second word) It is the first name of someone born in Europe, which is a pity because it limits his promotion abilities in his chosen career.

Fourth word 4 letters (3rd letter is A) not part of chain but birth place of the person referred to in the third word above.

Perhaps i was not clear as to what I meant by a chain For example:
FIN
finE
fineSSE

Except in my example it starts with four letters and one letter is added each time

Well, it's definitely an interesting clue. Whether I can figure this out is another story.
