Continental has changed our flight time from CLT to EWR - now have only 35 minutes to make our flight to CDG. Possible?

Oh I am sorry I thought you were connecting to an Air France flight. If you are connecting to Continental then its the same terminal.
I still think 35 minutes is risky. Newarks on time record is not very good. If there is an afternoon storm or bad weather things can get pretty screwed up. EWR also has a lot of issues with flight control in the afternoons.
Why not just switch to one of the earlier flights. You will have a long wait btween flights, but also peace of mind.
You could go over to the airport Marriott and have a nice meal and hang in the bar!

So I called Continental and they said I could either take the earlier flight out of Charlotte or the later (8:30) flight from EWR to CDG. I think I'll opt for the latter. I'd rather get to Paris a couple of hours later than have to sit at EWR for 5 hours. We probably won't make it to Auxerre for lunch as we had planned, but that's OK. We should still make it to our rental house just west of Beaune in plenty of time.
Haven't made the change yet because we can't get in touch with our friend who's traveling with us and can't make the same change for him as it was a separate reservation. The woman I talked to said there were several seats left on that 8:30 flight so I may wait until tomorrow to decide and hope our friend gets in touch by then. Thanks again for your help, everyone.

When you arrive in the US from ANY overseas origin and are required to claim or have access to your checked luggage then you must go through Security again and that is the reason why: because you do have access to that checked luggage.
It makes no difference if you arrive at and depart from the same terminal.

End of story - we are now all three booked on the 8:30 flight to CDG. It was quite easy to do, good service from Continental. It was a bit more complicated for our friend who had bought through Travelocity and tried to make the change through them. Customer service rep in India said they'd have to check and call him back. But once he called CO directly, no problem. Tout est bien qui finit bien!
