Do I Need A Transit Visa Lufthansa SFO-FCO

I am on a ticket purchased with miles through United Airlines. San Francisco to Rome is on Lufthansa with a brief layover in Munich. My return is a nonstop directly with United. I will not be leaving the airport in Munich. I’m getting conflicting answers on this. Do I need a transit visa for my Lufthansa flight? Thank you!

I’m American. Thank you! I don’t know why Lufthansa wasn’t willing to give me that information over the telephone. I hadn’t heard anything about a transit visa before then. Gave me a bit of anxiety as my trip is coming up soon. Thank you again.

It is not the airlines job to explain Immigration and Customs requirements, never has been. They would be responsible if they provided incorrect information . . .

I just called Lufthansa to ask if they wanted my passport information. The gentleman asked me if I had a transit visa. Told me to call the embassy. He knew that I was American. It’s all okay. Thank you again for your help.

You can go on Lufthansa's website and enter your passport info. That will save you some time when checking in. Enjoy your trip.

You will go through passport control upon arrival at Munich, then there are no passport checks from Munich to Rome.

You will go through customs upon arrival in Rome. Unless you have something to declare customs is nothing more than exiting through the green lane "nothing to declare".

Thank you! I’ve checked out a YouTube on how to transit between gates. Looks pretty easy to follow signs.

Greetings! I believe I fly into Terminal 2 gate H area and leave on a connecting flight from gate K area. Any help on making this transition would be most appreciated. I’ve tried to look up a couple YouTubes, but I still couldn’t get a total idea. I’m an older person and can get confused. Thank you!

IIRC, the airport website has maps and even an interactive map to show your path. But regardless, there are signs posted everywhere to guide you to your appropriate gate.

How long is your layover?

Thank you! My layover is 1 hour and 40 minutes from the time we land. Unless it’s delayed. I called the airline and the agent said it would be a 20 minute walk to the next gate.

Keep in mind that "20 minutes" may not figure in time at passport control or other unknown factors (mobility concerns, restroom breaks/lines) and security, if applicable (not sure if you will need to reenter security or not).

Personally, I'd want a longer layover in that airport. But if you're traveling on the same ticket, you are protected to the next available flight in case of delays or any other snafus.

Munich is a great airport, but passport control can take quite a bit longer than one might be expecting.

I don’t like having such a quick layover either. I’m hoping my connecting flight is a bit delayed. But definitely glad that it’s the same airline. I have one checked bag. Can’t carry it on. My luggage will probably make it on the plane faster than I will. Is it rude at passport control to politely ask someone if I could go ahead of them (and explain the reason…I am older…that might help) if the line is too long?

We would request wheelchair assistance for our mom as she moved slowly with age and sometimes got flustered getting from one terminal to another. The attendant always got her to the departing gate in record time. Don’t know if this could be an option for the OP?

Was this on a foreign flight? I still believe I’ll need to go through passport control even though I’m not leaving the airport.

Munich terminal 2 is big but easy to navigate. There is a main terminal concourse (G gates on one level and H gates on the level above them) and a satellite concourse (K gates on one level & L gates above them). To get from the main terminal to the satellite, follow signs for K gates. You'll go down an escalator to the underground passenger transport system (train), which runs every couple of minutes, and then take that out to the satellite, and go back up an escalator to the concourse with K gates. Either before going downstairs or on the way back up, you'll go through passport control. If you keep following signs for K, you'll be fine.

We did an H to L transfer two months ago, and it was less than 15 minutes from gate to gate - but since we were arriving from and departing to non-Schengen locations, we did not have to go through passport control.

The minimum connection time there is 40 minutes, believe it or not. As long as your arriving flight is on time, 1:40 should be plenty of time.
