Confused! train from Termini to Foligno. How do I get to Assisi?
I've been visting this site while planning my April trip to Italy. I want to get to Assisi from Rome by train. I read "get to Foligno" and I also read "get to Santa Maria degli Angeli". Can somebody tell me where is Foligno, Santa Maria degli Angeli and how do I get to Assisi from there?

Hello Rachel,

If you go by EUROSTAR* from Rome, you will have to change at FOLIGNO, which is about 10-15 mins. from Assisi.

There's a connecting train from Foligno, so you won't have to wait.

(There's also a DIRECT Rome-Assisi train from Roma Termini at 08.14 - but this takes 20-30 mins longer than the Eurostar service)

From Assisi station the town of Assisi is a 20-minute bus ride - there is a connecting bus outside the station.

N.B. When you get off the train go straight out to the bus, - if you miss it you'll have a long wait!
The driver will send you into the station bar to buy your bus tickets - but it's best to speak to him first so he knows to wait.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. * This is the ROME-ANCONA Eurostar from Roma Termini
I believe that Santa Maria degli Angeli is the actual city that Assisi's train station is located in. From SMdA you catch a short bus up to the city of Assisi itself. Assisi is halfway up a hill, whereas SMdA is down in a valley.

Foligno is the main rail junction on the Rome-Ancona rail line (other than the two terminal stations, obviously). From Foligno, you can change trains for Assisi/SMdA, Perugia, Cortona, and Arezzo or Florence.

According to the FS' website, there are two direct Eurostars from Roma Termini to Assisi that do *not* require a change of trains in Foligno. There are other direct non-Eurostar trains as well.

so, if I take the Eurostar to Assisi I need to change trains at Foligno, on to another train that would take me to SMdA, and then a bus up the hill. Right?
or I can take a direct Eurostar that will take me to SMdA, and from there a bus up the hill. am I getting this right? (Thank You Steve and CheckIt for the help!)

There are departures from Roma Termini at:

07.37 (ES)... Change at Foligno ... arrives Assisi 09.24
08.14 (IR) ....Direct .........arrives Assisi 10.32
09.37 (ES) ... Change at Foligno ... arrives Assisi 11.27

ES = Eurostar
IR = Inter-regional

For other timetable info see www.trenitalia.it

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. Assisi Station is called 'Assisi' even though it's near SMA - so you can't go wrong

Rachel - it might sound confusing, but is not. I always prefer to take the direct train - a bit longer to drive, but no need to change, and get of at Assisi - run through (or around) the very small station building, and ask the driver of the small bus to wait for you while you jump into the shoppie to buy your ticket!

Good luck, and enjoy Assisi!

Kindest regards.

Helen Malan
