Wild horses could not drag me to the Costa del Sol!
And when the first Web site about Salou lists "Pubs" before hotels, apartments, restaurants, etc., it reconfirms my determination not, repeat: not, to spend time with beer louts - of any nationality.

Salou is not Costa del Sol, but Costa Dorada , it's in Tarragona, Catalunya
Apart from the pubs question (which is absolutely right), weather in October is not any good there. Most probably rainy and , while still not cold..not good for the beach at all.

I am surprised that Salou would be the city you mention. Unless you have very specific needs and wants that can be satisfied there (and frankly, I would love to know what they are), there is no reason at all to visit it.
Tarragona is an OK place, but is nothing to visit if you have yet to see Barcelona. Salou, though?. . . I would consider other cities.

Me too try to avoid that places !!
But I happen to live two hours from Salou
If you want a place near the beach (little beach though), beautiful, quiet and relaxing, VERY good restaurants...go to Moraira. It's in Alicante, but for unknown reasons to me, it's not crowded with drunken tourists
Of course there are people, specially in summer, but not at all the kind (and the quantity) of people in the most famous resorts
