Compact or Mid-size car??

Message: I've rented a compact car for our trip in 2 weeks. We will be doing little driving with our luggage in the car. With a mid-size I know we will have a trunk so all the luggage can go in there but not so sure with a compact. The only time we might have a problem is when we leave Naples and do Pompeii on the way to Positano. Any opinions? You may reply to my email address. Thanks so much. These boards are so helpful.

Hi Sarabeth!
You don't say how many are going, or how long the trip will be. If there are 2 of you and say you each bring 1 good size suitcase and carry-on with a compact it should not be a problem since you will have the back seat as well as the trunk. I will say that on my last trip while waiting for my rental car we watched 2 women with so much luggage tring to fit everything into a compact size car. They did finally manage after a good while to get it all in but could not see out back window, and the driver and the passnger looked very cramped up front.

We over pack and when we've had sub-compacts fitting everything in was a bit of a challenge but quite doable.

The difference in rental cost is usually fairly substantial, and you may notice an even greater difference in the amount you spend on fuel.

You don't say how long you'll be gone, but I think many might think it self-indulgent if a couple of travelers couldn't fit their luggage into a compact ... or sub-compact ... auto.

I have a marvelous photo (and memory) of a family trip to Cancun. Our son and daughter were teens. We had WAY too much luggage. We rented a VW Bug. Everything fit (including the kids). Lookers-on laughed as they watched us pack-up at the airport curb, and applauded as they realised we would succeed. You have to have a good spatial thinker among you. That said, we no longer chose sub-compact cars although compacts seem to suffice. We'll rent a compact in May, but if we'd gotten a cheaper airfare, we might have opted for a midsize. The decision is now more based on how much driving we plan to do. We pack much lighter.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have never rented a car in Europe and it never occurred to me that I might have rented a car with no trunk. I just called AutoEurope and guess what? No trunk. I changed my reservation. We have two children and will need to keep our luggage in the trunk at least one day.

There will be 2 of us for a 9 day visit to the Amalfi Coast. I'm thinking that we will each have a big piece of luggage and maybe 1, possibly, 2 carry-ons. I know that the compact has a hatchback trunk. We've had them before and put stuff in the back seat. But I am concerned with luggage showing in the back seat..kind of an invitation to robbery...the cost isn't that much different in the rental price. I know the gas consumtion will be more..but I'm thinking we'll be more comfortable. I'm heading towards the mid-size..this is a surprise trip for my hubby's birthday and i want it to be great...
