Colmar to Alps Long Day Trip
We have made a decision to travel from Colmar to Mt. Titlis for a day. Yes - it will be a long day, but we are staying in Colmar to cut down on travel expenses.
What is the most cost effective way to travel from Colmar to Mt. Titlis?
It will be in November. We considered staying within Switzerland for 3 days but, I think it would be more wise to base in Colmar for 8 days. It would be unfortunate if the weather conditions are poor at Mt. Titlus for 3 days. The hope is that we can check the weather from Colmar, and decide to make a trip to Mt. Titus on any of the 8 days that is clear. It will make for a long day, but I think it is most cost effective, and flexible to change if the weather conditions are right.
Would there be any other mountain excursions that would make sense as a long day trip from Colmar in November?
Thanks in advance

It will cost a whole lot to go to Titlis and back from Colmar - probably $100 p.p. plus the expensvie aerial cable car itself probably about $50 p.p.
Check www.sbb.ch for special train fares - other useful sites www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com -info on Titlis cable, etc.
If you were going to Switzerland for 3 days I would not go to Lucerne but the Interlaken area if you want to experience the awesome high Alps and Interlaken hotels at that time may be as cheap as Colmar - lot cheaper than Lucerne and trains from there take you to Alps even more impressive than the Titlis area.

The Titlis gondola runs until November 5th and then again from November 18th. So, a day trip from Colmar to Titlis will be perfectly possible before November 6th and after November 17th.
You may leave Colmar at 7.23, change trains at Basel and Lucerne and arrive at Engelberg at 10.53. count about 45 min for the transfer to the Titlis gondola station and the gondola ride to the top.
You may leave Titlis after 2pm, stop over for 3 hrs at Lucerne and be back at Colmar at 21.05
Fare:
Colmar - Basel RT 29 EUR
Basel - Engelberg RT 85 EUR
Engelberg - Titlis RT 75 EUR
Total 190 EUR/pax

Worth $200 p.p.? Not if you're trying to economize by staying in Colmar.
Again Interlaken has many inexpensive hotels - Lucerne does not and Interlaken is gateway to such scenes a short train ride away:

Experience Switzerland more than a quick day trip to a mountain top from Colmar - well worth whatever price and again check prices for Interlaken or even Grindelwald hotels at that time.
