Unlike some cities where the sights are in a compact area Munich's are rather far-flung - the famous palace and the Olympic Park, BMW museum, etc - and of course Dachau - so you will use public transportation a lot if seeing all those things. So a pass of some kind, not that expensive to start with, can't be too bad a deal and yes put angst to rest - ride at will without thinking about it - something you may not do if paying each time.
