Cochem question
I'm going to Cochem in a few weeks and my question is, how far from the Cochem train station is the town square? From the map that I found on the web, it seems to be at least a mile away. Can anyone shed some more light for me? Russ, if you read this, could you let me know how far away I'll be from Frau Hilken? (I like to be as prepared as possible!) Thank you!

Someone who has been there more recently will add to this, but I recall a bit of a walk from the station, past the TI, to the square. I don't think it was an actual mile, but it could be close (and I'm not great with distances). Also, please note that it is a good steep hike up to the castle, though maybe cabs are available.

I think it's more than 1/2 mile but probably less than a mile. You're maybe a 12-min walk to the town square (Marktplatz), where you turn right and walk a couple more minutes up Oberbachstrasse - then a block or two uphill - before you're at Hilken's. Shouldn't take more than 15 or so altogether.
You'll enjoy your stay there, I think!
Gute Reise,
Russ

Grin,
do you have a hotel? We stayed at a very fun family owned hotel, LOTS of antiqities in the lobby, etc.. with a terrace overlooking the river. Had a great time there.
I can find the name of the hotel and reply again if you'd like.

annesherrod - thank you, I would like to know the name of the hotel. I'm already booked at a small pension recommended by Russ, but I always like to check out other places, too.
Thanks for the help, Russ. I know I'm going to love it there!

I am so sorry I have not responded earlier. I have had no free computer time!
Ok the Hotel is called Burg Hotel.
Moselpromenade 23
PH# - 02671/71-17
Part of the hotel is several hundred years old, but updated in the obvious ways.
Ask for a room with a balcony overlooking the river. It has the most gorgeous Panoramic views. Our children stayed in aonther room in the back of the Hotel. It was not nearly as charming.
You will enjoy the owners collection of antiques displayed everywhere. some of it looks as if it should be in a museum.
The restaurant on the first floor is the better one FYI.
The price was very reasonable- under $100 for the room with balcony and beautiful view!!
Have Fun!!

Here is a website with a bit of info on Hotel Burg. The site is in German, however, but gives an email address and info on price.

I meant to reply earlier with another suggestion.
Try to make a little short side trip to Burg Eltz. It is a fantastic castle about 18 miles north.
It is totally intact, medievil and so beautiful! If I remember correctly it is in the same family from the 12th century. There are original furniture and objects that are very interesting.
We were so glad we made the side trip. The drive is very scenic as well-
