Hi Barb, I knew I loved Atlanta when I was there recently!! So you can buy CocaCola sweetened with sugar instead of corn. Wish we could here in CA as I am allergic to corn. I have searched for years for some kind of drink that had sugar in it. And the funny thing is that the Mexican markets here have CocaCola bottled in Mexico but they to have corn instead of sugar.

Coca Cola switched to corn syrup in the US about 25 years ago as a low cost alternative to sugar, as the US price of sugar, to protect domestic producers, is about 3 times the price on the world market. The large agribusiness companies producing corn also have benefitted greatly from the use of High Fructose Corn Syrup.

Coca Cola in Canada, as in much of the rest of the world, is still made with sugar.

Whether there's a difference, I can't tell, because I rarely drink the stuff.

to answer this post directly, i live in the UK, and yes, i am/was well aware of this "problem". it is very common to get soda products produced elsewhere (i have a polish pepsi max on my desk at the moment - purchased in the UK). I have often seen and consumed the *oh so scary* "middle eastern" cokes that you refer to in your post.

i understand that your question was innocent but i think the nature of the responses was caused by your hysterical "do you know what's going on!!!" kind of attitude.

furthermore, your hysterics over coke produced in "not just nearby countries like Germany or France or Spain" (read - good, clean countries), smacks of racism. not saying you are racist just that the overall tone of outrage over pakistani, indian, etc. you are calling it garbage when you know nothing about it - just because it is from the middle east.

here in the UK, we routinely eat fish from bangladesh and all sorts of food from india and pakistan. we are hardly going to get uptight about coca-cola from these countries as we all know that coke is fastidious about its reputation and finding a finger tip or bad water in a pakistani coke will kill sales globally.

finally, <<<<Personally, during the last week my biggest problem is I like Diet Vanilla coke at home and many stores, even those carrying Diet Coke...>>>>
you should consider yourself very lucky...i don't even want to begin to tell you what my biggest problem of last week was.

sorry but here in the UK, we do not share your outrage.

Metellus, I sure DO wish cola drinkings could have tasting parties where the connoisserus could get together! Just like wine drinkers do. They could prove that they really can tell the brands apart, and really enjoy themslves.

Because I beg to differ, real coke nuts like me , certainly COULD tell the difference. ANd I know other people who could I had a friend try repeatedly to 'trick' a friend, but never could.
You must not be a real cola fanatic. I'd take that bet anyday.

If this thread where all about wine, it wouldn't get such criticism. All the wine drinkers would be swearing they know the difference from different batchs, never mind differnt brands from other parts of the world and NO ONE would criticize them.

In fact, everyone would think that was wonderful and that they were sophisticated wine drinkers. and every one would be so pleased and feel so wordly. And no one else would be calling all this 'crap' or saying it tasted like P***.

SO how about the wine drinkers (and beer drinkers ) enjoying their wine and
stop criticizing those of us who don't happen to like wine as much as Coke. We aren't calling wines or beer P***.

DOn't even get me started on Chocolate. Have you ever done a taste test on 3 Kit Kat... once from Britain, one from Canada and one from USA? ( and we aren't even talking about "GOOD" chocolate here. Try it!
Same wrapper, different ingedients.
TOTALLY different.
Number 1 Britain!
Number 2 Canada
and number 3 USA... ( was too sugury and not nearly enough chocolate.

SO I can certainly say that coke is different and the taste tells the tale.

Her her, COke drinkers!!! Unite!!!

I only read the first few posts, so I don't know if this has already been stated ...
I know this is the Europe board, but, please, neither Indian or Pakistani is a language. And neither are in the middle east.

by the way, when Coke sells the special "Kosher for Passover" version, this too is sweetened with cane sugar rather than corn syrup. I have no idea why cane sugar is kosher, or corn syrup is not (can anyone enlighten me?) but I always try to buy a couple of cases, because the sugar stuff is much better.

Hi China_Cat, yes the kosher CocaCola is made with sugar. And I tried to get it where I live but did not have any luck.

About the sugar versus corn. It has been explained to me, but I am not positive on all the details so will just say that from what I understand some areas Jews are from are not allowed to have corn during Passover. Jews from other areas are allowed to. Hopefully someone else here on Fodors can answer your question better then I have. And hopefully I have not given an incorrect answer.

kodi,
most of the criticism of this rediculous OP is not because it is a discussion about coke/pepsi but because it is hysteria about imported coke. upon discovering this "outrage" on a holiday in Britain, she is trying to expose this *great scandal* to those of us who live in UK and get us riled up about it.

if she expects us to jump on the bandwagon with this, she is very ignorant of our culture.

I just moved to the UK and every so often, you just need a Coke... So i bought a canned one from some random store, popped it open and took a huge swig, and almost spewed it out! It was horrible. I had to look at the can to make sure it was Coke. It was, but was from Eastern Europe. I couldn't even drink it. The next time i got a coke, i checked the can, and it was made in England. I also noticed that it was made with sugar instead of corn syrup.

Walk-I have a question for you. You're an American living in the UK-why do you try so hard to act like it's "we Brits against you Americans" when you're also American??? What's up with that?

Just a question, no need to get riled up about it.

Really? I always thought Walk was British? Certainly talks like a Brit (says 'holiday', not 'vacation', for instance).

Hey Fairfax,
You moved here?
Did you end up in Wales or England?

It seems the only 'wars' here are the ones the OT is trying to start. The OT is 'amazed or scared.' Really!

I can't figure out what the outrage is primarily for: that the sugar-free beverage might not be manufactured in the UK and in, god forbid the middle east (or Pakistan--somewhere 'less pure' than the UK?), that Coke light tastes different from Diet Coke, that different water affects the taste of these fine beverages, or that some bottles have labels on.

'not a worldly discourse...but an important one.'
Only important for those who live under bridges.
