Who cares! It's all sugary water. The UK is famous for a wonderful selection of beers....

Perfect solution - skip the Coca-Cola products and try out all the different, delicious and interesting European soft drinks. I think daily of Virgin Green Apple cola and Kaz lemonade in France. Can't wait to get back there and consume all those scrumptious empty calories! And yes, I am a Coke-aholic, but the ONLY time I drink a Coke in England or France is when I order one at McD's, Quick or BK so that I can have one on ice in the hot summertime.

I always get a big kick from those who say the US isn't familiar enough with other countries, when the US has the most diverse population in the world. Here in NY, a few neighborhoods over from me, there is Elmhurst, Queens, which Nat'l Geograhpic magazine says is the most diverse place in the world, with over 160 languages spoken.

I have to jump in here and say that I agree with xyz and noticed the same thing on a recent trip. I had the same experiences as Dorothy01 and after one mistake, made sure I was buying Diet Coke and not Coca-cola Lite. They are NOT the same thing. YOu guys can have your beer (yuk) or whatever, I'll take my Diet Coke anyday!!
Also, years ago, when travelling from Canada to a trip in Florida, we filled our cooler with diet coke at home ( in Canada) and also bought some in the south and the cans were mixed together in the cooler. I could tell which ones were the Canadian ones and which ones were bottled in Mississippi. My husband didn't want to believe it, but had no choice. I could tell them apart every time.

My sister inlaw just returned from China and brought Coke Lite with her. I like it way better than diet coke. Does anybody know what artifical sweetner they use in it so I can use it to sweetnen my tea. I dosen't have the bad after taste to it like the diet coke we have here. Of course the ingredient listing on the can is in Chinese.

What a fun thread, have never read this before.

Since I am allergic to any corn product I am able to drink CocaCola in Italy (at least up to the last time I was there) as the sweetner was sugar (beet sugar?)
instead of corn syrup which is what all the CocaCola products use in the US.

Mexico use to have CocaCola sweetened with sugar but I guess they too now use corn syrup as the Mexican cafe in my town sells CocaCola from Mexico and the sweetner is corn syrup.

Oh well, better not to drink CocaCola.

Yes, Diet Coke and Coke Lite DO taste different from each other because they ARE different:

Diet Coke is made - the world over, I'm pretty sure - with aspartame.

Coke Lite is made with saccharine.

So it's the same difference as that between NutraSweet and Sweet&Low.

They are NOT identical products with different packaging, they are different products.

I've drunk many a can/bottle of Coke Lite when in Europe, and I won't hesitate to drink it again. I think of it as part of my "Europe experience".

It's fine, just a different taste from the Diet Coke I drink at home, which is what prompted me to take a look at the ingredients in the first place.

On a similar note, Cadbury's chocolate is sold all over. Here we had a full stock with arabic writing that was just as authentic (said it was made in UK) and tasted fine. Who knows? Maybe it was extra stock? I DO notice some Cadbury's made by Hershey company do NOT tatse the same (although the creme eggs do). It depends where it is made, so maybe the Coke thing is similar too? I daresay they print labels for every country and every language but the product would be the same most of the time. Just an observance. I do not like coke unless it has some Jim Beam in it....(not allowed any now anyway)!

In Australia our Cadburys is nice and creamy but craving a chocolate fix in Thailand once we found the Cadburys chocolate to be quite different, not creamy at all. We were told that there is an ingredient added to stop it melting in the hot climate. True or false - who knows but it didn't give us our "fix" so now we take our own!

This has been an interesting thread as to who drinks what and why. I don't drink any form of Coca Cola BUT I do cook with Coke! Every Christmas we prepare the gammon ( a big leg of smoked pork without the bone)by boiling it for two to three hours in pure undiluted Coca Cola! The skin is then removed, scored, the glaze applied and baked for a short while. Simply delicious!

May be I can throw some light on the whole issue. In India, a 2 l bottl eof Coca Cola retails for something like $1.00. How much does it cost in the US? Amswer this question and you might get the answer why somebody might want to import from another country. I think it happens all over the world. For example, the Head and Shoulders shampoo being retailed in India invariably has Malaysian lettering on it, as does some of the Sony products. You trust the parent company to ensure quality.

"Message: It always has amazed me, the passion for one soft drink over another. There must be parties where connoisseurs get together and sample different vintages. You know, the 1998 Georgian Coke Lite was superb."

I'd bet anyone any amount of money that they couldn't tell tell difference among brands and versions of cola in a blind taste test. I know because I've done it. After the first sip, the taste buds are destroyed and everything tastes exactly the same.

I'm not an huge soft drinks fan, but Coca Cola is a classic. The original is vastly different from Pepsi or supermarket own brands, so it's extremely easy to distinguish the two.

Coke's great with lunch if a large glass of wine wouldn't be more appropriate. Cuba Libre's aren't all that bad either.

There is Coke bottling plant a few miles from here. I know (for sure) of 2 guys who were sacked for peeing in the vat, so the thought of foreign Coke doesnt scare me.
The idea of quality in factory food is nonsense.

I guess we are lucky we can still buy a crate of Coke in glass 'bottles'! ( at less than 10 US cents a bottle )I reckon is 'does' taste better from the bottle.

Last month I was in South Florida and went to a Cuban restaurant.

Asked for a Cuba Libre.

The young bartender didn't know what it was.

GreenEyedCatWoman has it right--the two no-calorie products are sweetened differently--Diet Coke has Aspartame, Coke Light has saccharine and soon there will be Coke Zero, sweetened with Splenda. Tasweetened with saccharine) is also available in select markets.

Here in Atlanta, we have a large Hispanic population, and many stores carry Mexican Coke sweetened with sugar instead of corn syrup. Tastes are different in different areas, and Coke has different products to meet different tastes. It is interesting to visit World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, where they have a tasting room of various Coke products from all over the world.
