Civitavecchia, Italy

We will be spending a day in May docked in Civitavecchia and wonder what we can do there. We have been to Rome twice. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

We did not go into Rome from our cruise ship either because we had been there a few times. The port city seemed very industrial. We just left the ship to have lunch, then headed back to enjoy the ship (gym, spa, etc.).

There is nothing of intrest near the port, stay on the ship if you do not plan on going to Rome.

There is more than one interesting place to visit around Civitavecchia, but you need someone who knows and takes you there. Many small ancient towns and villages, castles, lakes, wineries. Bracciano's castle, upon a hill overlooking the lake, is the place where the Tom Cruise's wedding was. Absolutely fantastic! I suggest you to contact a local limousine service. There are few professional and not expensive small companies in there.
I used www.romelimousineplus.com, suggested to me from the staff of the Hilton Rome Airport. Ask for Paolo if it is available. Nice guy!

There are ruins of a Roman terme on the outskirts of the town. Guided tours in English are available. There's also an archeological museum in Civitavecchia.

A short train ride away is Tarquinia and the ruins of Etruscan tombs.
