I visited the Cinque Terre on May 2. The trains are not stopping at Manarolo or Corniglia. Someone on the train said the hiking paths between those two are closed. I was not interested in hiking. I went to Monterosso which looks good. There is still some re-construction going on. Varenna is not so good. The main walking street from the train station down to the water is under construction. The street is closed off about half way down, but there is a small ally to the right that will take you to the water. It is quite noisy there. Very few shops are open.

Sorry, I meant to reply to you also. There was a horrible flood there last October. Mudslides destroyed a lot in Varenna. I had been there the day before the floods also. It's a big difference. Really sad.

scatcat---can you clarify your statement:"The trains are not stopping at Manarolo or Corniglia."???
We are going to Corniglia at the end of May. Apartment owner said that trains stop as usual. Some trains don't stop at every station, but that has nothing to do with the flood.

Sorry, I go to both Varenna and Vernazza on the same trips. Yes, Vernazza is still a mess. As far as the trains, I didn't go any further than Vernazza. A tour director at the hotel where I stayed told his group the train didn't stop at Corniglia and Manarola. And the stops are not listed on the departure charts. I didn't see the reasoning for them not stopping either. I never go to Corniglia, so not sure at all. After the noise at Vernazza, I was ready to go back to SML.
