I'd say Como is as attractive as 5-Terre especially when you take into account movement sickness. But don't leave our Padua (Padova), Mantua (Mandova), Ferrara, Verona etc across the Po down to Ravenna
Once again, you don't know much but you feel the need to have an opinion about everything. You have basically told 'em to stay on the tourist's path and not to visit the largest medieval historic center in Italy that, incidentally, is also an Unesco site.

Just a precaution, renting a car in Florence is a pain in the ass. Returning the car is even a bigger pain in the ass. Rent it night before as Jean suggested, so you can get started early.

To answer your questions:
1. I do agree the car will give you quite lot of flexibility on timing and also changing plan in case of weather

2. I do not think it is known to be a windy area. The drive is fine Florence- Pisa - La Spezia, only highway you should be fine
3. Very safe - not to worry at all!
4. Coming to Cinque Terre just to see 1 village I believe it does not worth to just come and rush. Also it is not only about the village. Ideally, I would stay one night in LaSpezia, and take the train to view the different villages from their. You can't bring your car to Cinque Terre, better to take an hotel in La Spezia for 1 night and leave your car in the Hotel parking.

Thank you sooo much for your answers to all of my questions!!! Super helpful

So we have decided to leave Cinque Terre for another trip at this time. Will stick to our original plans of Rome, Florence, Bologna and Lake Como
