nbbrown, I do not know where in Tuscany you are staying but I can assure you that you will love Tuscany!
Huitres, who travels to Italy so much has given you some very valuable advise on her Dec. 29th posting to you.
And than you will still see Rome.
Do remember this, you could be in Italy for three months straight (I have) and still not be able to visit everywhere you want to. I am sure Huitres and most other posters that love Italy will agree with that.
You will see enough of Rome if you follow Huitres suggestion to whet your appetite. And then the next trip can be Rome and the Amalfi Coast! That could include Capri,Ischia, whereever you want.
We always need an excuse to return to Italy
Enjoy dreaming about your first trip to Italy. And Happy New Year!

You might consider a day trip to CT from your base in Tuscany and spend a night or two in Rome instead. If you are near Florence you might contact Alessandro Camilli. He was our guide and driver from Florence to Sienna and surrounding areas in Oct. 2004, and we really enjoyed the day we spent with him. He had plans the following day to take a couple to Cinque Terre for the day and apparantly does it quite often. Dropped them off at Riomaggorie and picked them up in Vernanzza. He'll also make side trips to wineries along the way. We took the train from La Spezia to Florence and I think it was only an hour, which would give you plenty of time if you want to go that way. I agree with some of the others that the Almafi Coast shouldn't be rushed. We were there 2 years ago and it is one of my most favorite places in Italy. Good luck!
